Don was born in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Edmund Pendleton and May Featherstone Pendleton, into a family that already included a brother, John Edmund, 10, and sister, Margaret Agnes, 8. He attended Sioux City public schools, graduated from Central High School in 1931, and received Liberal Arts and Law Degrees from the University of Iowa. The Pendletons were a pioneer Sioux City family. Don's grandfather, Isaac Pendleton, who came to Sioux City in 1858, was a lawyer and Iowa District Court Judge. His father, Edmund Pendleton, was also a lawyer; father and son practiced law together in Sioux City prior to World War II. When war came, Don joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation and served as a Special Agent until the end of the war. In 1946 Don married Lt. Roberta Stock, who had also grown up in Sioux City and had been a WAVE during the war. They had five children, who remember their childhood with great fondness as a time of music, conversation, laughter, and educational opportunities. Prior to his appointment as Judge of the Iowa District Court in 1965, Don served as City Attorney of Sioux City (1958 and 1959), Assistant County Attorney of Woodbury County (1941, 1942, and 1955), and as chairman of the Sioux City Civil Service Commission (1954). He retired from the bench in 1982 and began working to improve his golf game. Don was a member of First Congregational Church, Masonic Orders, and the Woodbury County, Iowa State, and American Bar Associations. He served as President of the Woodbury County Bar Association (1952), President of the Sioux City (Downtown) Kiwanis Club (1953), President of the Sioux City Chapter of the American Interprofessional Institute (1959), and board member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association, Woodbury County Tax Research Conference, Sioux City Art Center Association, and Sioux City Museum and Historical Association. He was a past member of Dakota Dunes Country Club and the Sioux City Boat Club. Don is survived by his wife of 58 years, Roberta; his children--Judith, Janet, Jean, John, and James; two sons-in-law, Sean Caulfield and Dan Boyer, grandchildren Neil and Nicholas Herbold, Elizabeth Floyd, Douglas Pendleton, and a great-granddaughter, Kelcy Herbold.
