The car, a convertible with a special motor, was termed a "total wreck" by police investigating the accident, which happened early Saturday morning. Dr. R. F. DeWitt of Plymouth, medical referee, pronounced Cummings, operator of the car, dead at the scene of the accident. He sustained a skull fracture, broken neck, broken left leg and multiple lacerations of the face and body. Cormica was taken by LaFontaine ambulance to the Sceva Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth, where he was treated for a broken rib on the left side, and multiple contusions and lacerations. He was held at the hospital for over the week end for observation and discharged on Monday. According to State Trooper Raymond Welch of West Plymouth the car was headed East a short distance east of the home of Fire Chief Lloyd E. French, Sr., on Route 25. Tire marks on the pavement showed that the car skidded 620 feet. The entire left side of the car was sheared off. The car was taken to Kelly's Body Shop and Garage in West Plymouth, where it attracted many people who were passing by, and stopped to see the crushed car. Assisting Trooper Welch in the investigation were Trooper Gene Meier of Campton, Police Chief Charles Madden and Officer Donald Young of the Rumney police department. Funeral services for Cummings were conducted at the Rumney Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. Frederic Rowley, Jr., pastor, officiating. Mrs. Julia Kelley was organist. Burial was in the West Rumney cemetery, with the LaFontaine Funeral Home of Plymouth in charge of arrangements. Bearers were Joseph Papio of West Campton, Malcolm Pringle, Plymouth, and Raymond and Ralph Poitras of Rumney. Usher at the service was Robert Patterson of Rummey Depot. Donald Percy Cummings was born May 15, 1942 in Plymouth, son of Raymond and Thelma (Plume) Cummings. He had lived most of his life in Rumney and attended Plymouth High School. He was a member of the National Guard and was a private in Battery A, 1st Howitzer Battalion of the 197th Artillery in Plymouth. He had served six months at Fort Sill, Okla. During the Summer months he had been employed by the L. W. Packard Co. mills in Ashland. He had recently been employed with his father as a carpenter by Arbor Homes. Survivors include his father, Raymond C. Cummings of Rumney; one brother, Raymond A. Cummings of West Plymouth; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. His mother died March 22nd of this year. Deepest sympathy is extended the family in the tragic death of the young man. Card of Appreciation We are indeed grateful to friends and neighbors for the many kindnesses extended us in our bereavement. The cards and flowers, letters and other expressions of sympathy from our friends were a great comfort to us in our time of sorrow.
