Donald Peter was born on September 8, 1930, on a farm southeast of Alton, one of six children born to Bernard and Emma (Konz) Minten. Read More	Mr. Donald Minten, age 91, of Alton, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen. Donald Peter was born on September 8, 1930, on a farm southeast of Alton, one of six children born to Bernard and Emma (Konz) Minten. He grew up in rural Alton and attended school at St. Mary's Academy. In 1952, he was drafted into the United States Army, serving in Japan during the Korean War, until his honorable discharge in 1954, when he returned to Alton. On June 16, 1961, "Donnie" was united in marriage to Mary Jean Watson, in Sioux City. The couple made their home in Alton for a few years before buying their own acreage south of town, where they raised their three children. Donnie worked as a farmer, raising crops, cattle, and sheep, as well as driving truck for Freriks Trucking and later for TeBrink Trucking. In 1990, Donald and Mary moved to the Minten homeplace, where he continued working as a farmer and short haul truck driver. As his Alzheimer's worsened and his health declined, nursing care became necessary in 2019. Donald was a lifelong member of St. Mary's parish and a member of the Floyd American Legion Post in Alton. He found joy in his work as a farmer, particularly raising sheep, and in earlier years, horses. Despite his dementia, Donnie still asked regularly for his iconic cowboy boots so he could return to the farm. Survivors include his wife of more than 60 years, Mary, of Alton; three children, Rachel "Rae" Minten, and Daniel "Dan" Minten, both of Alton; and Sarah, and her husband, Chris Sholly, of Granville; two grandchildren, Charity Sholly, of Sheldon, and Christian Sholly, of Granville; three great-grandchildren, Desmond, Xander, and Xavier; a brother and his wife, Myron "Mick" and Nancy Minten, of Beckville, Texas; and a sister and her husband, Marilee "Mary" and Robert Elliott, of Richmond, Minnesota; along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and their spouses, Bernadine and James Christoffel, Emily and Richard Schroeder, and Kathleen and Milo Harnack; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Betty and LeRoy Kirschman.
