GRAVESIDE SERVICE 11:00 am Monday, July 8, 2013 Trinity Cemetery, Volga, SD Jerry Cooley, Bagpiper Musical Selections "Mackintosh Lament" "Amazing Grace" "Scotland the Brave" On Friday, July 5, 2013, the final chapter was written by Donald Peter Mackintosh, son of Donald Charles and Ethel Marie. Don was born July 22, 1931, in the home of his maternal grandfather, P.J. Kleinjan in Gregory, SD. He attended First through Sixth Grade in Arnold's Park, IA. The family then moved to Brookings, SD, where he graduated from high school in 1949. That fall, Don enlisted in the U.S. Army, stationed in Japan and was a combat veteran of the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as an enlisted soldier in 1952 and later accepted an Officer's commission in the Reserves and retired as 1LT in 1964. Don attended South Dakota State College for two years before transferring to the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1956. On December 27, 1959, Don was united in marriage with Barbara Ann Melton. They had three children, '62 Donald Charles, '63 Elizabeth Ann, and '69 Blake Melton. He worked for Reynolds Aluminum in Chicago, after which he returned to South Dakota to Law School at USD. After one year, he transferred to the University of Chicago Law School nights (then called Kent College of Law) and worked for Shell Oil Company. During his senior year at the University, Donald received an offer to work for Proudfoot, a management Consulting Company. He moved to California in 1965 and worked for them for eight years as a field consultant. Don authored a business book for Prentiss Hall and after retirement published his novel "Pharaoh's Missiles". Don formed an independent consulting company, Brevet International. In 1972 the firm transferred to Sioux Falls. In 1973 Don formed Brevet Press. He retired in 2002. Don had a great love for travel and experienced five continents and some 44 countries, but what he valued most were his relationships with friends and family. Donald was a member of the American Legion, the DAV, the VFW, the South Dakota State Historical Society, the Minnehaha Historical Society, the Clan Mackintosh, the Masonic Blue Lodge #144, the El Riad Shrine, and the Westerners. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Barbara; children, Donald Charles and wife Ana, Blake Melton; daughter-in-law Nancy Ann; grandchildren, Rio Ann and Donald Stewart; sister, Ruth (Gordon) Rose; brother, Hartley (Jane) Mackintosh; his beloved dog, der Kaiser; and a host of other relatives. He leaves special friends, Vance and Virginia Sneve, Tom and Judy Kakonis, Chet Gottschalk and Marianne Goodis, and a flood of others.
