Honorary bearers were Don Curry, Louis Holste, Larry Follmann, Tony Dvorak, Jim Follmann, and Bob Blankenship. Kevin Schaaf, Lisa Meineck and John Henkenius were gift bearers. Interment was in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery. Steen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Donald Raymond Henkenius was born in Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa on September 8, 1935, the son of Herman and Anna Nees Henkenius, and moved with his parents to a farm one mile south of Massena in March 1939. He graduated form Massena High School in 1953 and was also a graduate of "Agricultural Credit and Appraisal" at Iowa State in Ames, and "Iowa School of Baking" at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Upon graduation from high school Don worked at the Creston Daily Advertisor in Creston and then was employed by the Farmers Savings Bank in Massena from December 1, 1955 to May 3, 1985 and served as vice president for 24 years. A licensed real estate broker and owner of Henkenius Real Estate and Farm Management, he did appraisals and farm management in Cass and adjoining counties. Don was active in community projects. He served as city treasurer, city clerk, chairman of Massena Park Commission, trustee of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, finance officer for the Des Moines Catholic Diocese, Director of Cass, Inc., officer and director of the Massena Chamber of Commerce, Inc., past director, secretary, vice president, and president of the Massena Lions Club, and a board member and treasurer of the Massena Centennial, Inc. He currently was serving as Wiota City Clerk and as a hail adjuster for the Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company of Iowa. He was the owner of Hilltop Farm and raised registered Angus cattle and was interested in soil conservation. He was a collector of seed corn related items. He was preceded in death by his father Herman in 1981; his brother Kenneth on January 26, 2001; his mother Anna on February 18, 2001; three brothers-in-law, Howard Klahn, Donald Fritz, and Lyle Schaaf. He is survived by three sisters, Ethel Fritz of Oakland, Irene Klahn of Carroll, and Norma Schaaf of Massena; sister-in-law Jean Henkenius of Cumberland; nieces and nephews, Rodney Fritz of Hanover, Kansas, Sheryl Fritz and Jolene Hay of Oakland, Rod Kruse of Omaha, Nebraska, Michael Kruse of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jan Walton of Omaha, Nebraska, Ted Henkenius of Arlington, Nebraska, John Henkenius of Bridgewater, Deborah Gerlitz of Des Moines, Bruce Klahn of Carroll, Gina Charochak of Blue Springs, Missouri, Lisa Meinecke of Grimes, Colleen Morrison of Bartleville, Oklahoma, Karen Morrison of Johnstown, Colorado, Steve Schaaf of Massena, and Kevin Schaaf of Omaha, Nebraska; great nieces and nephews and a host of friends and business associates.
