Read More	* IN LOVING MEMORY OF * Donald Sawyer was born on Wednesday; August 23, 1922 near Dunbar; Marshall County, Iowa. He was the son of Bertram "Bert" and Alice (Weitzel) Sawyer. He graduated from the Dunbar High School. During World War II, he served our country proudly in the United States Army, stationed in Okinawa. In 1942, he was united in marriage to Helen McCoy. She preceded him in death in 1970. In 1972, he was united in marriage to Helen Albright Hellmich at the Little Brown Church. They farmed north of Dunbar many years until moving to LeGrand; Marshall County, Iowa in 1998. He also sold seed corn for 40 years in the area. Donald enjoyed playing cards, fishing, golfing, traveling and was passionate about farming. He was a faithful member of the Iowa River Church of the Brethren, the Marshalltown and LeGrand Senior Citizens, served on the LDF School Board, the American Legion and the Eagle's Lodge in Tama. Donald Sawyer, 83, of Le Grand, longtime Dunbar area farmer, passed away on Monday afternoon; July 18, 2006 at the Villa del Sol in Marshalltown; Marshall County, Iowa while in care of the Iowa River Hospice. His passing came peacefully at 2:25 p.m. Those left to mourn his passing are: his children: Larry (Judy) Sawyer of Marshalltown; Marshall County, Iowa. Donna (Ron) Webster of Marshalltown, Iowa. Mike (Bonnie) Sawyer of Tama; Tama County, Iowa and Chuck (Vicki) Sawyer of rural LeGrand; Marshall County, Iowa. Helen's children: Kaye Ann Hellmich of Arlington; Arlington County, Virginia. Donna (John) Winter of Cedar Rapids; Linn County, Iowa. Mary Lee Hellmich of Chicago; Cook County, Illinois and Rick (Dee) Hellmich of Algona; Kossuth County, Iowa. Fifteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. In death he has rejoined his parents, his wives: Helen and Helen who died on December 20, 2005, brothers Wilbur, Russell, and Roger and one in infancy and great-granddaughter Ashley. May they rest in peace. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday; July 21, 2006. Funeral services and a celebration of Donald's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2006 at the Iowa River Church of the Brethren with Rev. David Lewis officiating. He will be laid to rest in the LeGrand Friends Cemetery with full military honors by the VFW Harry C. Harter Post #839. A memorial fund is being established.
