"Don" Matthews, Sr., age 77, of Ocala, Florida, away peacefully on Saturday, November 12th, 2011. Mr. Matthews was born in Florence, SC on October 30th, 1934, and was raised in Mullins. He served in the United States Army, and after his military service, he attended the University of South Carolina. Later, Mr. Matthews moved to Hialeah, Florida where he lived until retiring to Ocala, Florida. He owned and operated Matthews Construction Company in Miami, and was of the Baptist faith. In Ocala, Mr. Matthews served as President of the Miniature Horse Association and was the former owner of the Flying M Ranch in Ocala. His hobbies included piloting, horses, country and western music and his pet dogs. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him. Mr. Matthews' surviving family includes his wife, Linda "Dreda" Matthews, of Ocala; a daughter, Jan Mills, of Ocala; a brother, Hoyt Matthews, of Ocala; a step-daughter, Linda Nickell, of Sebring, Florida; and 4 grandchildren. Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his son, Donald R. Matthews, Jr. Graveside services for Mr. Matthews will be held at eleven o'clock a.m., Friday, November 18th, 2011 in the Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery in the Friendfield Community.
