Read More	Father Edmund Gard Mother Vivian Landgraf Donald Raymond Gard 1937 - 2016 Donald Raymond Gard, 79, passed away after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease on Tuesday, May 17 in Glendale Arizona, surrounded by his family. Don was born on February 19, 1937 in Carroll, Iowa to Edmund and Vivian (Landgraf) Gard. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Early, Iowa in 1955. He attended Creighton University, and served in the United States Army in Korea. Don started his career as a radio announcer in Laramie, Wyoming and also worked in Estherville, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska. Thereafter, he worked as News Editor for the Catholic Mirror newspaper in Des Moines, Iowa. He later worked for National Traveler's Life Insurance Company in Des Moines, Iowa, from which he retired in 2002. Don loved his family and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was always there for his family, and made time to attend important family events. Don was a man of great faith and strong beliefs. He put his strong vocal talents to use as a long-time lector at Sacred Heart Church in West Des Moines, Iowa, something he enjoyed tremendously. Don had a great sense of humor, loved puns (good or bad), and knew how to tell a good joke. Don had a great love of sports, especially college basketball, and enjoyed rooting for the underdog. Don was a formidable Scrabble opponent and lifelong lover of crossword puzzles. He was a hard worker who took pride in everything he did and, as an editor, in the accuracy of everything he wrote. Don was very warm, kind and loving. He enjoyed learning, and always sought to improve his knowledge about issues and the world around him. Don was very handy and loved tinkering with cars and other electronics. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. Don is survived by his loving children Victoria (Joseph) Lumia, Robert Gard, Dawn (Brian) O'Connell, Mary (Daniel) Medina, Melissa Gard, and Amy Snodgrass; his beloved grandchildren Lily, Delaney, Ryan, Mia, Abby, Nathan, David, and Olivia; and his siblings Marlene Aarhus, Karen (Bob) Zettl, and Connie Hoye. Don was preceded in death by his father Edmund, his mother Vivian, his brother Edward, his sister Coleen (Ron) Keenan, and his brothers-in-law Ron Aarhus and Joseph Hoye. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, May 21st at 11 a.m. at Praise Sanctuary, 2910 N 35th Ave. Suite #2, Phoenix, AZ 85017. There will be a reception immediately following the celebration. A second memorial service with funeral mass and burial will be held at Sacred Heart church in Early, Iowa in the coming months.
