Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Friday, August 24, 2018 at Zion American Lutheran Church, Eureka, with Pastor Ryan Gage leading the service. Interment, with military graveside rites, follows at the Church Cemetery. Donald Raymond Kaul, son of Katherina (Perman) and John Kaul, was born at their farm south of Eureka. This is where he was raised and attended Jackson TWSHP #4 Rural School through 8th grade. He continued his education in Hosmer, SD, graduating with the HHS Class of 1955. Don served his country in the United States Army, being inducted October 6, 1955. Following his honorable discharge on August 15, 1957, he returned to the farm. Don married Wilma Mehlhaff at the Eureka Reformed Church on July 6, 1958. They lived on Don’s home farm the first year of marriage. They then leased different farms in the area until purchasing the home farm in 1966. They spent 41 years as dairy farmers until semi-retiring in 1999. Donald belonged to the Zion American Lutheran Church in Eureka where he taught Sunday school and served on the Church Council. He also belonged to the Fred Weller American Legion Post No. 186, Eureka, and Eureka VFW Post No. 5126. He served on the McPherson Co. Weed Board for 15 years and spent several years as a Lions Club member. Donald enjoyed spending time with his family and was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He found great pleasure in playing cards and going with friends for drives in the country. Don is survived by Wilma, his wife of 60 years; four daughters—Tammy (Bernie) Fischer, Tina (Doug Novotny) Kaul, Lora Heinrich and Kathy Jo (Scott) Kruse; two grandchildren and five great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law—Wilbert Salzer and Harry (Verlena) Mehlhaff; two sisters-in-law—Darlene Clarke and Delores Mehlhaff; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family preceding Don in death were his father on September 18, 1983, his mother on January 9, 1967, his stepmother, Martha (Kempf) Kaul, on February 28, 1984, his sister (Norma Salzer); his parents-in-law (Herbert and Martha Mehlhaff) and brother-in-law (Alan Mehlhaff).
