Funeral services were held Saturday, October 23, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. Born June 5, 1931, in rural Battle Creek, Iowa, Donald Raymond Monroe was the son of Raymond and Florence (Chisholm) Monroe. He grew up and attended country school in rural Battle Creek, then graduated from Ida Grove High School. Don served four years in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He returned to Iowa where he worked several years for Culligan, then carried mail in Ida County for 52 years. On March 22, 1956, he was united in marriage to Lois Rickabaugh at the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. The couple was blessed with one son, Kurt. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2006. Don was a talented carpenter and also enjoyed refinishing furniture. He especially loved time spent with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lois; one son, Curt (Darcy Lindstrom) Monroe of Kansas City; and three grandchildren, Lindsy Rae, Rhett Joseph, and Megan Grace. He is also survived by two sisters, Donna Mae (Ray) Neville of Granger, and Doris Ann Jones of Ida Grove; his mother-in-law, Vivian Tolle of Ida Grove; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Darlene Braasch.
