His mom's father was Peter Christian Thomsen, and they all lived with him in the house that he built for his family about the time that Grandma Elsie was b. I have not been able to prove that his middle name was Christian, but I am sure that it was. 1910, 18 Apr: Donald C. Heflin (2) b. IA was living with his mom, Elsie M. THOMSEN Heflin & her pa, Peter C. Thomsen at 424-19th Ave. in Council Bluffs, IA. Peter had his own Shoe Shop & owned the home. The census noted that Elsie had lost a child (Mary Ellen). 1920, -- -?-: Donald C. Heflin, as recorded in the LONGFELLOW GRADE SCHOOL RECORDS, was sent home when he was still in grammar school because of St. Vitus Dance, a nervous disorder. Mom sed that he would scare the other kids when he had a fit. Some rec.s state that he went thru the 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th Grades. Understandably, this made it difficult for him to get a job. Usually he got Laboring jobs on one of the 8 railroads. 1920, 05 Jan: Donald C. Heflin (12) b. IA & his 1/2 bro. Robert S. Spellmeyer (1) b. Dad worked, as a laborer, on several RRs, and the UPRR was his last employer, as a Clam Shell Operator in the Omaha Shops. He was so proud to get that job. 1946, -- -?-: Leila Belle "Lee" GASKILL Heflin was asked to leave due to having started drinking/smoking. 1947, 23 Oct: Donald R. Heflin sued Leila B. Heflin for a divorce asking custody of their 2 children. 1947, 14 Nov: The FINAL DECREE was granted. 1948, 22 Jun: Donald R. Heflin rec'd a Marriage Lic. from the Court Ho. in Nodaway Co., MO. 1948, 28 Jun: Donald R. Heflin (40) b. IA wed #3) divorcee Vera Lucille STODDARD (34) b. MO in St. Joseph, Buchanan, MO, and mom's brother, Lewis E. & w. Caroline Bernadine PETERSON Gaskill, were with them. 1957, -- -?-: Dad had a heart attack about a year before he d., and was put on the disabled list. Why he ended up in the Jennie Edmondson Hospital is not clear, but he d. there of a Blood Clot in his Lung at midnite or so. 1958, 23 Aug: Donald Richard Heflin, just shy of 50, d. in his sleep in the Jenny Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA of a Pulminary Embolism. EXPLANATION: When dad was req'd to sign his name, at the UPRR ofc, he, usually signed "D.R. Heflin" so the guys took the DR as meaning he was a doctor, thus the nickname of "Doc" came about.
