Description	:	Funeral services for the former Superintendent of Schools, Donald S Johnston, 73, will be held Saturday afternoon, December 1 at 1:30p. m. at the Presbyterian Church in Monticello, Iowa. Mr. Johnston passed away in his sleep in Austin, Texas where he and his wife, Nell, were residing. Mr. Johnston was Riceville Superintendent of School from 1952 until his retirement on June 30, 1972. A reception was held for Mr. and Mrs. Johnston on Sunday, May 21, 1972, at which time the new gymnasium was named as the Donald Johnston Gymnasium. Mr. Johnston is survived by his wife, Nell, and one daughter, Mrs. Tom (Donna) Kelly, Austin, Texas and three grandchildren, Molly, David, and Nancy. OBITUARY Donald Sterrett Johnston, son of David H. and Alice Ferguson Johnston, was born August 5, 1906 in Hopkinton, Iowa. He attended grade school and high school in Hopkinton. Donald attended Lenox College and received his B.A.and M. A. degrees from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He taught and coached at Marble Rock, Iowa, and served as Superintendent of Schools in Thompson, Iowa for fifteen years and in Riceville, Iowa for twenty-one years. Donald was married to Nellie D. Cox on October 8, 1927. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Donna Lee Johnston Kelly, Austin, Texas three grandchildren, Molly, David, and Nancy; two brothers, David, Ankeny, Iowa and Paul, Des Moines, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, a sister, Helen, and two brothers, William Milo and Eugene. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. Burial in Oak Wood Cemetery. Pall bearers were Gordon Jensson, William Diederich, M.J. Moore, Tom Rasmussen, Floyd Sill and Bob Rasmussen. Honorary pall bearers included Ronald Dempsey, Dr. T.G. Walker, Leonard Gibbs, Don Morasch, Marion Elefson, Dale Goldberg, Everett Berend and Claire Adams. Memorial gifts may be sent to Mrs. Donald S. Johnston, 9455 Singing Quail, Austin, Texas, 78758. Memorials sent in memory of Mr. Johnston will be toward another trophy case to be located in the lobby of Donald Johnston Gymnasium.
