Kehnast was dead on arrival at Defiance City Hospital Tuesday afternoon after he collapsed, possibly of a heart attack, while assisting fellow officers subduing a mental patient in Maag's Tavern, 311 Ottawa Ave. The body is in the Mansfield, Mast and Mock funeral home where friends are being received and where the church recitation of the rosary will be conducted at 9 p.m. Thursday. Kehnast is survived by his wife, the former Vera Wolf, Pleasant Bend, to whom he was married on Sept. 20, 1944; a son, James, and three daughters, Connie, Julie and Christine, all at home; a brother, Robert, Defiance, and three sisters, Mrs. Theodore (Imelda) Moninger and Mrs. Ray (Dorothy) Kohout both of rt. 3, Defiance, and Mrs. Henry (Virginia) Jacob, Toledo. He was preceded in death by a son, William Edward, in 1950; and a brother, Lawrence. A son of the late Edward M. and Anna (Steffel) Kehnast, Don was born Aug. 1, 1911 and reared in Noble Tp. He attended area grade schools and was graduated in 1929 from St. Mary's Catholic Commercial High School, Defiance. He worked at farming until the late 1930's and then spent some time in long distance hauling. In 1942, in became an auxiliary military police officer, assigned to the Zeller Corp., Defiance, a position he held for nearly three years before becoming deputy sheriff April 1, 1944. He continued as full-time deputy until July 1946, when his predecessor, Alner D.Ryan, returned from military service. Kehnast then served as a part time deputy on call, until Sept. 1, 1947, when Attorney Ryan resigned to enter law school,. Kehnast had been a deputy under Sheriff John K. Bridenbaugh ever since that date. Kehnast attended a number of law enforcement school, including those given by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and an instructor's course offered at Bowling Green State University in 1963. He was a qualified instructor in the Ohio Law Enforcement Officers training program, teaching his first class of recruits last year. He was an escort driver for the Red Cross on trips to Cleveland for open heart surgery cases and was a member of the Defiance County Gallon Club. Kehnast was a member of St. Mary's Church and its Holy Name Society, Defiance Moose and Eagle lodges, Kral A. Weaner Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, of which he was president last year., Msgr. Lang Council of the Knights of Columbus, Defiance County Fish and Game Association, the Defiance County Mounted Posse, and the Michigan-Indiana-Ohio Law Enforcement Officer Association. In 1959, he was campaign director for the March of Dimes, and in 1963-64 was chairman of the Defiance county chapter's Cancer Crusade. Defiance Crescent News Obituary
