Donald W. Bickner was born May 27, 1924 at home in Smith Township, Brule County to F.W. and Nettie (DuVall) Bickner. He attended Doty Country Cchool and graduated from Kimball High School in 1942. After high school, he worked on the family farm until being drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II serving from March of 1945 until December of 1946. He served in the Philippine Islands in the Occupational Army as the war had ended in 1945. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to Kimball and started farming on the home place. On September 5, 1948, Donald was united in marriage to Lois Swanson in the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain. Donald farmed his entire life and was a Registered and Certified Seed Grower. He was active in the S.D. Stockgrowers Association, S.D. Farm Bureau, and S.D. Tractor Museum. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Drips Post No. 130 and the Immanuel Lutheran Church.Donald passed away on December 3, 2014 at Firesteel Healthcare in Mitchell, SD at the age of 90 years. Preceding him in death were his father Frank, step-mother Harriett Bickner, his mother Nettie Bickner-Rodgers, his brother Ralph Bickner, and half-sister Donna Rae Montgomery.
