Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth St., in Nevada. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, August 4, 2009. Donald W. McHose passed away peacefully Friday, July 31, 2009, at his residence in Dallas Center, after a brief battle with pneumonia. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. and services at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug 6, at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth St., in Nevada, followed by a reception at Nevada Central Presbyterian Church for all friends and family. Born June 25, 1919, to Raymond and Amy (Fontz) McHose, Don was raised in Nevada and resided there his entire life with the exception of his time spent overseas in World War II. After returning home in 1946, he married Arlene Gilliland, of Des Moines. They soon settled in Nevada to raise their three children, Mark, Alan and Ron. Don ran Nevada Brick and Tile Company, as the sixth generation in the business. He was also active in Nevada National Bank, as well as overseeing several farms and properties and computer enterprises. He was an avid golfer (charter member of ICCC), bowler and bridge player, and he volunteered on many civic organizations during his years in Nevada.He also served on the Story County Hospital Board, the Nevada Library Board, the Nevada School Board and the Nevada City Council. He loved watching sports, boating and being involved with his family and grandchildren, Kendra, Andy, Lacey, Sean, Brandon and Katie. In recent years, he also enjoyed being with his great-grandchildren, Owen, Sam and Elliot. He recently was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene, on Jan. 9, 2009; his parents; and one brother, Sam. He has a sister still living in California. Don will be remembered most for his quiet wit, thoughtful counsel and the oft-related reputation of being one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. His strength and devotion to his family and grandchildren and their families will stay in our hearts forever. His legacy as a kind and caring person, who lived a good life, is a trait that we all hope to inherit. He will be sorely missed.
