Memorial services are 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Yankton with Reverend David Gunderson officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791 of Yankton and SD Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 2, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Donald was born April 26, 1930 in Miller, South Dakota to Henry Wales Cotton and Inez Mary Harris. He was the eldest of six children and graduated from St. Lawrence High School in St. Lawrence, South Dakota in May of 1948. Don then worked at First National Bank in Miller until January of 1951 when he enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. His military service was mostly as a crew member on Navy Patrol Bombers in the Western Pacific Region. Don married Adeline Sommer of Miller, SD on October 20, 1951 in Millington, Tennessee in the Naval Training Station Chapel. Four children were born to this union. Following his Navy discharge in December of 1954, he worked ten years at First National Bank in Miller and seven years for United National Bank in Brandon, South Dakota. Don became a licensed investment broker in 1972 and moved to Yankton where he started his investment management career. He lived through many economic challenges during his career as an investment broker, but the Golden Rule was always the standard he lived by. Don married Inez Kludt of Tripp, South Dakota on July 9, 1981. In October of 1984, he joined forces with the independent firm of Private Ledger Financial Services and remained with the firm until his retirement in December of 2001. Then, he and Inez began their adventure of spending winters at Rancho Reata Community in Mesa, Arizona, and immensely enjoyed participating in all of the activities there. As usual, Don became friends with everyone and soon was given the honorary title of "Mayor." Don enjoyed traveling and visiting his children, grandchildren, friends and relatives in his retirement. He and Inez were members of St. John's Lutheran Church in Yankton for 32 years until they moved to Sioux Falls in June 2013 where they then became members of Resurrection Lutheran Church. Donald is survived by his wife, Inez Cotton of Sioux Falls; two sons, Ken (Mary) Cotton of Wagner, SD and Jeff (Mindy) Cotton of Champlin, MN; two daughters, Becky (Joel) Hobbs of Harvest, AL and Debbie Cotton of Yankton; one step-son, Gary (Pamela) Kludt of Sioux Falls; 11 grandchildren; three brothers, Howard Cotton of Florence, AZ, Richard (Ellie) Cotton of St. Lawrence, SD and Tom (Donna) Cotton of Valley Springs, SD; two sisters, Maxine (Ted) Lamm of Northfield, MN and Ardith (Gil) Bristlin of Belle Plaine, MN; and many nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister, JoAnn Cotton."
