Description	:	OTTUMWA - Donald William Briggs Sr., 84, of 218 Wildwood Drive, died at 7:50 a.m., May 19, 2005, at Hospice House, Ottumwa. He was born Jan. 6, 1921 in Ottumwa to Alfred and Maudaline Miller Briggs. He married Norma Maxine McCarty Sept. 27, 1941. A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1938, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an aviation mechanic. He moved from Ottumwa to Carson, Calif., in 1957, returning to Ottumwa in 1984. He was born Jan. 6, 1921 in Ottumwa to Alfred and Maudaline Miller Briggs. He married Norma Maxine McCarty Sept. 27, 1941. A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1938, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an aviation mechanic. He moved from Ottumwa to Carson, Calif., in 1957, returning to Ottumwa in 1984. He had worked for John Morrell & Co. for two years before moving to California. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in the mail sorting department, retiring in 1978, and also worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District from 1959 to 1984 as a bus driver. He was a member of the Way of Peace Ministries, where he served as an elder for eight years. Survivors include his wife; son, Donald William Briggs Jr. of Mountain View, Calif.; daughter, Shirley Jean Bridgman of Ottumwa; four grandchildren, Heidi Munyer, Celeste Glaze, Brian and Jason Briggs; three great-grandchildren, Cody Jamison Glaze, Carys Aiyana Glaze and Christian Allen Glaze; and sister, Dorothy Crane of Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with the Rev. LuEllen Wroth officiating. Burial with military rites by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion will be in Shaul Cemetery. Visitation will begin 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the family present from 2-4 p.m. Memorials may be made to Hospice House or Way of Peace Ministries.
