McMillen was born on August 15, 1927 to George and Lydia (Rediger) Bender in rural Seward County, NE and passed away on January 8, 2015 at the age of 87 years, 4 months, and 24 days. She graduated from Seward High School and began working as a secretary at Protective Fire Insurance Company in Seward. The company sold and was moved to Lincoln. Donna retired after 54 years with the company. After the death of her mother, Donna, as a young woman, spent several years caring for her three younger siblings and managing the family. She had a strong work ethic which served her well in this responsibility. Donna never had children of her own, but cared for her family members like a mother would. She was always generous with her time and money, even if it meant she had to sacrifice herself to give to others. She was active in the Evangelical United Brethren Church serving as a Sunday school teacher, children’s Sunday school superintendent, and singing in the choir. Donna was a member of the United Methodist Church and also attended Frieden’s United Church of Christ. In 1958, she was married to Ernest McMillen. He died of illness in 1987. She enjoyed caring for her rose bushes and working puzzles. But her greatest joys seemed to come when she was working at tasks and helping others. Family was a priority, and she was diligent in remembering birthdays and promoting holiday gatherings. Donna is survived by brothers Marlin Bender, Alvin Bender, and Dennis (Debbie) Bender, sisters Retha (Lloyd) Dowding and Elaine (Larry) Lamberty, sister-in-law Marty Bender and many nieces and nephews. Donna was preceded in death by her parents George and Lydia (Rediger) Bender and step-mother Florence (Menze) Bender; husband Ernest McMillen; brothers Wilbur Bender and Cletus Bender; sister-in-law Miriam Jean Bender and niece Kamela Lamberty.
