Leslie and Bessie (Jones) Burns on the family farm near Stickney, SD. She grew up on the farm and attended country school near there through the 8th grade. She attended Stickney High School and graduated in 1947. She was united in marriage to Robert Messer on June 30, 1950 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stickney. Messer, 85, of Stickney died Thursday, March 19 at the Good Samaritan Center in Corsica. Donna was born April 28, 1929 to Wm. Leslie and Bessie (Jones) Burns on the family farm near Stickney, SD. She grew up on the farm and attended country school near there through the 8th grade. She attended Stickney High School and graduated in 1947. She was united in marriage to Robert Messer on June 30, 1950 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stickney. They made their life in Stickney and worked together at the Stickney Argus. After 50 years of operating the linotype for the Argus, Donna retired and worked for a short time at the Stickney Manor assisted living. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and enjoyed bowling, cooking and baking and the meals and fellowship at the Senior Citizens Center. Donna went to her heavenly home on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at the Corsica Good Samaritan Center at the age of 85. Grateful for having shared her life are her 3 children: Steven Messer of Mitchell, SD; Mary Jane "MJ" (Jim) Ketelsen of Nanaimo, British Columbia; and Brad (Helen) Messer of Mitchell; 5 grandchildren: Brodie, Tanna, Kirbi, Matt and Angie; 3 great-grandchildren: Kyra, Kaia, and Simon; a step-sister, Edith Mendelsohn of Florida; a sister-in-law, Lonnie Burns of Mitchell; a brother-in-law, Vernon Jacobs of Mitchell and a special friend, George Safar. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; step-father, John Calhoun; 2 brothers, Clifford and Marvin Burns; 2 sisters, Shirley Bruseth and Dorothy Jacobs; and a step-sister, Betty Briese.
