She received her education from a rural country school near her home and then attended Bristow High School and graduated in 1953. She had the honor of being crowned Miss Bristow while in high school. Following school Donna worked at the Allison State Bank. On October 28, 1956, Donna was united in marriage with Jake DeGroote at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church – Vilmar, rural Greene, Iowa. The couple made their home in Allison, Iowa and then moved to Clarksville. In 1972 they moved to a farm near Bristow, where Donna stayed home to raise her children and worked alongside Jake with the farming. While living in Clarksville Donna attended St. John's Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school. Currently Donna is a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church – Vilmar, where she enjoyed teaching Bible school in her earlier years. Some of her favorite past times were canning, baking - especially wonderful pies and bread, and making her homemade strawberry jam. Donna loved to entertain and have fun with all who listened by playing the accordion, yodeling her favorite songs and playing the piano she learned to play by ear. She loved getting together with her family as often as possible and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Donna had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed visiting and joking around with all. She was a very selfless woman who was always grateful for everything she was blessed with. Donna passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at her home in rural Bristow of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Junior Dralle. Donna is survived by her husband of 57 years, Jake DeGroote of Bristow, IA; seven children, Cindy (Gary) Dean of Shell Rock, IA, Sally Tapp of Bristow, IA, Diane (Ross) Zimmerman of Aredale, IA, Susan (Rick) Riebkes of Wellsburg, IA, Tammy (Jeff) Cuvelier of Collins, IA, Todd (Mitzi) DeGroote of Maxwell, IA, and Stacey (Chad) Reichert of Waverly, IA; 18 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, at St. John's Lutheran Church Vilmar rural Greene with burial in the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, (319)278-4245, and one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family of Donna DeGroote.
