Donna Maye (Nielsen) Byriel was born on a farm in Iowa in Shelby County on May 13, 1931, the daughter of Rasmus and Alma (Peters) Nielsen. Byriel, age 85, of Boone, died June 21, 2016, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Donna Maye (Nielsen) Byriel was born on a farm in Iowa in Shelby County on May 13, 1931, the daughter of Rasmus and Alma (Peters) Nielsen. She graduated from Viola Consolidated School in Viola in 1949. On June 9, 1951, Donna married Glenn Byriel in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Donna worked for the Boone Community Schools in the Food Service Department. She began as a baker for Page School, was head baker at Franklin School, and retired in 1996 as Kitchen Manager at Boone High School. She was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church and served on the funeral committee. She enjoyed playing bridge and was active in several bridge clubs. Donna was a member of the Boone County Hospital Auxiliary. For 18 years, Donna worked in the concessions stands for Little League, Babe Ruth, and the Boone High School baseball games. She was past president of the Babe Ruth concessions. She loved attending the sporting events of her sons and grandchildren. Donna enjoyed reading, playing cards, especially bridge, baking and cooking, walking, and watching game shows and 'The Bold and the Beautiful" on television. For the last 15 years, she and Glenn wintered in Texas and Florida. Donna is preceded in death by her parents, two infant grandchildren, Tanya Ericka Byriel and Jeremy Mark Byriel, three brothers, Virgil Nielsen, Donald Nielsen, and Elmer Nielsen and his wife Pat, and two sisters, Jean Loudenslager and Alice Winther and husband Harold. She is survived by her husband Glenn of Boone; four sons, Michael and wife Charmaine of Grinnell, Brian and wife Diane of Boone, Rick and wife Jennifer of Urbandale, and Perry and wife Diana of Boone; six grandchildren, Cara (Brian) Kenkel, Ann (Andy) Wollner, Gary Byriel, Joe (Erin) Byriel, Ben Byriel, and Sam Byriel; four great grandchildren, Sydney Kenkel, Isabele Kenkel, Nicholas Kenkel, and Cassidy Wollner; a brother Marvin (Laurel) Nielsen of Audubon; three sisters, Irene Hansen of Audubon, Mary Jane Steenhusen of Irwin, and Janell Roberts of Exira; a brother-in-law, Fred Loudenslager of Indianola; and numerous nieces and nephews. In memory of Donna, memorials may be directed to Augustana Lutheran Church, Israel Family Hospice House, or the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone. She has been cremated. A Memorial Service was held Monday, June 27, 2016, at the Augustana Lutheran Church with Pastor Dick Dahle officiating. Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall was in charge of the arrangements.
