Born in Salisbury, MD on June 30, 1949, Mrs. Fretterd was the daughter of the late Donald Charles Messick and Mabel Mae Hicks Messick. She moved to Denton with her family in 1964 and graduated from North Caroline High School in 1967. She then graduated from the McQueen-Gibbs School of Nursing. Fretterd of Denton, MD, died Monday, November 4, 2013, at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. She was 64 years old. Born in Salisbury, MD on June 30, 1949, Mrs. Fretterd was the daughter of the late Donald Charles Messick and Mabel Mae Hicks Messick. She moved to Denton with her family in 1964 and graduated from North Caroline High School in 1967. She then graduated from the McQueen-Gibbs School of Nursing. She then held various Nursing positions with the Memorial Hospital in Easton, MD, including 18 years in the Emergency Room, from which she retired in 1995. Mrs. Fretterd is a Life Member of the Denton Volunteer Fire Co. which she joined 1969. She had held the positions of Treasurer, Secretary, President of the Ladies Auxiliary, and had been one of the DVFC's first women firefighters. For many years, she served as a Delegate to the MD State Firemen's Convention. She had also served as Secretary for the Eastern Shore Firemen's Association, President of the Delmarva Volunteer Firemen's Association, and is in the Delmarva and Eastern Shore Volunteer Firemen's Associations Hall Of Fame. She was also a member of the St. Luke's and Bloomery United Methodist Churches. Mrs. Fretterd is survived by her husband, Wayne F. Fretterd, Sr. of Denton; two sons: D. Charles Fretterd and his wife Angela Allen of Raleigh, NC and Wayne F. Fretterd, Jr. and his wife Dannielle M. Fretterd of Denton; a sister, Margaret Collison and her husband James of Campbellsville, KY; three grandchildren: Alyssa, Zoe, and Jake; and many extended family members. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Dana Marie Fretterd, on April 28, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Friday, November 8th, at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second Street in Denton where friends may call from 6 until 8 on Thursday evening. The interment will be in the Bloomery UMC Cemetery in Smithville, MD. The family suggests that friends send memorial donations to the Caroline Hospice Foundation, PO Box 362, Denton, MD 21629.
