Crandell, of Central City, Nebraska, passed away, October 10, 2009, in Grand Island, Nebraska. Donovan was born April 9, 1931, in Columbus, Nebraska to Mark L. and Buena M. (Jackson) Crandell. When Donovan was in the first grade, the family moved to Central City, Nebraska. Donovan graduated from Central City, Nebraska High School in 1949 and then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Nebraska. On February 27, 1951, Donovan entered the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged on February 18, 1955. For two years, Donovan traveled with the Larry Elliott Band and then returned to the University of Nebraska to complete his degree in music education. From 1960 to 1962, he was the music director for Central City, Nebraska Schools. Donovan moved to the Chicago, Illinois area, where he was a music instructor and guidance counselor at Palos Park Schools and he completed his master's degree at the University of Chicago. After retiring from teaching in 1984, Donovan returned to Central City, Nebraska and operated a piano tuning business. Donovan was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Central City, Nebraska and was active in all aspects of church life. He served as an elder, a deacon, he taught adult Sunday school, was prayer group leader, and served communion for shut-ins. Donovan was a student of the Bible and enjoyed leading Bible study groups. Donovan was a member of the church bell choir and sang for services. Donovan was a member of Lone Tree Singers, the Symphonia Music Fraternity, and the Piano Tuners Guild. He enjoyed Nebraska football and attending the local American Legion baseball games. Survivors of the immediate family include his sisters, Beverly J. Crandell of Central City, Nebraska and Carol and Darwin Dasher of Winterset, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents.
