She had been staying at Jefferson Healthcare Center for the past 3 months due to critical health problems. Dora was born Jan. 24, 1921, to Clarence and Francis (Partridge) Wortman in Warren, Ohio. She was a 1938 Jefferson High School graduate. Dora married Belden "Bun" Lewis Gilbert on Oct. 9, 1940, in Greenup, Ky. They had two children, Belva Jean (Gilbert) Boone and Neil Eugene Gilbert and lived in Lenox, then later in Jefferson while raising their children. Dora worked for many years at The Toggery in Jefferson and Forsyth's Fashions in Ashtabula. She retired with her husband, "Bun", in 1980 and moved to Frostproof, Fla. They enjoyed 12 years of retirement together until Bun's death on Feb. 27, 1992. Dora continued to live in Florida for 16 more years, until March 2008, when she moved back to Jefferson to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Belva and Daniel Boone. Dora was a member of the Jefferson Grange and the Grange Auxiliary Ladies until she moved to Florida in 1980. When her children were very young, she taught Bible School at the Lenox Federated Church. Dora was an accomplished seamstress and in crocheting, making most of her own clothes and her children's. She enjoyed square-dancing and ballroom dancing with her husband most of their married life. She and Bun also enjoyed camping, fishing and playing cards with friends. She bowled in a league for a few years and dabbled in golf for a time. After coming back to Jefferson in 2008, she joined the Jefferson Community Center and participated in many senior activities that included Bingo, cards, Senior Stretch, lunch and their Senior Prom. She always enjoyed family gatherings with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During the past 3 years, she loved visiting Florida with her daughter and son-in-law for a yearly four-week stay. A part of her heart was always in Florida. Surviving her is her daughter, Belva (Daniel) Boone of Jefferson; son, Neil (Connie) Gilbert of Rock Creek; sister, Viola (Bill) Kowalski-Truby of Erie, Pa.; three grandchildren, Shelly (Boone) Magda of Jefferson, Todd Boone of Columbus and Tracey Allen Gilbert, formerly of Orwell; and three great-grandchildren, Cody Tyler Magda, a Senior at Jefferson Area High School, Nicolette Alexis Boone, a Sixth Grader in Pickerington, Ohio and Tanner Gilbert of North Carolina. Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband, "Bun" in 1992. At Dora's request, no calling hours or funeral service will be held. There will be a private graveside service for the family in Oakdale Cemetery at a later date. Boone Star Beacon JEFFERSON — Belva Jean Boone, age 72, Hickory Ct., Jefferson, died unexpectedly Monday afternoon, Dec. 23, 2013, during emergency transport to UH-Geneva Medical Center. Belva was born in Jefferson, Ohio, on Dec. 18, 1941, to the late Belden Lewis Gilbert and Dora May (Wortman) Gilbert. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1959. She worked at the Ashtabula County Health Department for 4 years (1959 to 1963). She married Daniel Boone of Colebrook, Ohio, on Dec. 16, 1961, at the First Congregational Church in Jefferson by the Rev. Vance Frank. They had two children; Shelly Lynne (Boone) Magda of Jefferson and Todd (Corri) Daniel Boone of Westerville. They have one grandson, Cody Tyler Magda serving with the U.S. Navy in Jacksonville, Fla. and one granddaughter, Nicolette Alexis Boone of Westerville. She also has a brother, Neil (Connie) Gilbert of Harpersfield Township. Belva was the Jefferson Elementary School Secretary for 34 years from 1974 until retiring in 2007. When her children were young, she was a Girl Scout Leader for 4 years and helped with Little League and JAGS. She helped start, and played in, the Jefferson Women's Softball League. She bowled in the JALS Teachers and Friends Bowling League for several years. In her youth, she was very active in 4-H and was the 1955 Junior Fair Queen. She competed with the Ashtabula County Junior 4-H Leaders Square Dance Team at the State Fair several times and served as a Camp Whitewood Junior Counselor for many summers. She currently was working for the Fleming & Billman Funeral Homes as their videographer. Belva had been involved with the Jefferson Area Falcon Follies since its start in 1976. She started the Falcon Follies Board of Directors in 1981, remained on the Board for the next 22 years, and resigned in 2003. She directed the Follies in 1980, 1981, 1996 and was the General Chairman in 1983, 1992, 1999. She also participated in the Ashtabula Green Door Follies in 1980 and 1981. Belva took great delight in dancing in the kick line for most of the years she was involved in the Falcon Follies. She also enjoyed doing choreography, comedy and novelty solos. Belva received the "2002 Jefferson Community Service Award" at the Jefferson Citizen of the Year Banquet in 2003 for her work with the Falcon Follies. She refers to it as her "15 minutes of fame". Belva has always lived in Jefferson and has led a very family oriented life. She considers her 2 grandchildren the "ultimate bonus from God" and the lights of her life. She enjoyed water skiing, biking, poker (she loves her club "Poker Pickles" and her "Bunco Girls"), dancing, movies, theater, reading, vacations, and really loves the internet. She always said that, as a secretary, computers enhanced her life tremendously. When she retired and got her own personal home computer, she delighted in getting back in touch with many old school friends through the internet. Funeral Services will be held 5 p.m., Saturday, at the Jefferson Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS AND CREMATORY, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with Alisa Nierzejewski, certified celebrant, leading the service. Cremation will follow the services. Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m., Saturday, at the Funeral Home prior to the Service. The family request memorial contributions be made to the Jefferson Area High School Swim Team or the Falcon Follies, envelopes will be at the funeral home.
