Born in Lexington County, July 10, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Martin Henry and Mary Harmon Porth of Lexington. Formerly of Ballentine Estes in Irmo, and a member of Salem Methodist Church, she was married to her husband, Wesley Wilbur Spires for 58 years. For over 35 years, she and her husband owned State Wholesale Heating Supplies, a Rheem company, in the Midlands of South Carolina. When the business was first started, she and her husband lived in the Oak Grove Community and were active in Zion Lutheran Church, where she was director of the Luther League, director of Vacation Church School and active in the Lutheran Church Women. An avid gardener, she specialized in roses and loved flower and plants of all kinds. She was also an amateur photographer, delighting in pictures of nature. She enjoyed giving her flowers and pictures to others. She also enjoyed sending cards to the sick and shut-in, and became affectionately known "Mama Sue" to family and community. A kid at hearts, she loved all the holidays, and had large collection of memorabilia for all the major holidays. Christmas was her favorite, and she prepared for the holiday all year long. Much of the collections were gained from the extensive travels she and her husband made all over the world. Surviving are her children, Betty McWhorter, Patsy Amick and Nell McCarty, all of Lexington, Roger Spires of West Columbia and Gloria Cook of Gaston; grandchildren, Tracey Amick Stevens, Paige Martin Belcher, Christy Spires Todd, Amy Lee Amick, Timothy Lee Whitehurst, Mandy Noel McCarty, Norman "Trey" McCarty III, Whitnei Spires Jeffcoat, Brook Ellen Spires; step-grandson, David L. Cook Sr.; great-grandchildren, Perry Martin Belcher, Kathy Grace Belcher, Megan Elizabeth Belcher, Justin Michael Whitehurst, Matthew Lee Whitehurst, Harland LeGrande Stevens, Marjorie Grace Todd; step-great-grandchildren, Johnathan Reed McLaurin, KcKensie Rebecca Cook and David L. Cook Jr.; brothers, Raymond Z. Porth of Gilbert, Cletus S. Porth of Lexington, H. Lagree Porth of West Columbia. She was preceded in death by her son. W.
