Read More	Doreen Savage Cottrell, age 81, former Sedro-Woolley and Bow resident died Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at her home on Mercer Island, WA. Born April 10, 1928 in Everett, WA, she was the daughter of Warren and Thelma (Hall) Savage. The Savage and Hall families came to the Skagit Valley in the late 1800's. She was a 1946 graduate of Burlington-Edison High School. She married her husband, Thomas E. Cottrell in 1946. Following her marriage, at only 18, she bravely traveled alone by train across the continent from Mt. Vernon to Washington, D.C. to be with her husband, who was in the Army. After a few months she took the train, alone again, back to Mt. Vernon. She lived for two years in Perth, Australia when her husband, Tom, a civil engineer, was transferred there to help build a U.S. Navy base. She traveled to the job site at Northwest Cape, about 900 miles north of Perth in the Australian desert. She endured a 3-day car ride back to Perth over dirt roads, dry rivers and creeks seeing kangaroo, emu, snakes and lizards. Other travels took her to Hawaii, Fiji, New Guinea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, Okinawa, Japan and Alaska. Doreen worked most of her life outside of the home as a medical administrator while raising her two sons. In the early 1970's she directed the installation of a cutting edge medical records and billing computer system. She was a tireless care giver to members of her family. She cared for her ailing aunt, Hattie Chestnut for more than 10 years and her father, Warren Savage, who came to live with her for more than a decade in the 1980s and 1990's. She also cared for her ailing husband Tom after the two had moved to Covenant Shores Retirement Community in 2003. He passed in 2005. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas W. & Chris Cottrell of Bellevue and Timothy L. & Suone (Cotner) Cottrell of Seattle; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William F. & Betty Cottrell of Seattle. Proceeding her in death were her parents, and her aunt and uncle Lonnie and Hattie, Chestnut of Bow. She lived on their farm at Bow during high school. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, November 2 at the Hulbush Funeral Home, Burlington. (Skagit Valley Herald Publishing Co via Legacy.com)
