Chico Weekly Chronicle-Record, Saturday, February 9, 1895, pg 3 col 2: Crossed The Divide. Death of Mrs. William Clark at Nelson Monday. The announcement of the death of Mrs. William Clark of Nelson will cause a wave of sadness to touch the hearts of all who knew her. Old age and consumption, against which she could battle no longer, carried her “across the divide” Monday, her death occurring at the Clark home near Nelson. The severe ordeal, however, came not unexpected, as for several days the good old lady had been struggling between life and death. For several years she and Mr. Clark were residents of Chico, but later moved to Nelson, where they located on a farm. There they made a large circle of friends and Mrs. Clark became by-words as a symbol of kindness. Deceased was born in Kentucky, and was 75 years of age at the time of her death. A husband and one son survives her. Mr. Jensen of Bicknell’s undertaking establishment went to the home yesterday and prepared the remains to be sent to Napa this morning, where the funeral will take place tomorrow. ~~~ Near Nelson, Butte Co., on Feb. 4, 1895, Mrs. Dorinda Clarke, formerly a well known and greatly esteemed resident of Napa county, fell asleep in Jesus, after a long and painful illness. Her maiden name was Young, and she was a sister to Mrs. Henry Boggs of Lakeport, to Mrs. Inman of Napa and to Mrs. Sneed of Oak Knoll, from whose house she was buried. She was born in Bath county, Ky., May 6, 1819, and was consequently nearly seventy-six years old. At fourteen years of age she made confession of her faith in Christ, and was baptized by “Raccoon “ John Smith, as he was called, a man of revered memory, who baptized more people than any other man of his day. She ever after continued a faithful member of the church of Christ. In 1835 the family moved to Jackson county, Mo., where on Dec. 15, 1840, she was married to William Clarke. In 1853 Bro. Clarke came to California with his family, and settled in Napa county, where they made their home for twenty-six years. For over fifty-four years these two faithful souls journeyed along the way of life, sharing together its sunshine and shadow, till the husband laid the wife to rest in this picturesque valley. The attachment of the two for each other in life was remarkable, and the care and devotion shown by him for her welfare in her last illness was beautiful. Of the six children born to them, one sleeps in Missouri and four by her side. The remaining son and his wife reside near Nelson, Cal. She was a woman of sound judgment, of benevolent disposition, and of firm adherence to truth and righteousness. She was a sincere Christian, a loving wife, a gentle mother and a kind neighbor. She had expressed the wish that the day of her burial might be pleasant. It was beautiful. A glorious flood of warm sunlight was poured upon green fields and blooming flowers, the birds sang their songs on the bush, and the bees hummed around as we laid her body to rest in the little cemetery at Yountville, beside four of her sleeping children. Let us cherish her memory and live in the hope of meeting her on the other side.
