Doris Celia (Schmitt) Thompson was born on January 2, 1927 on her family’s farm a mile and a half northeast of Spillville, Iowa. Doris was the sixth of seven children of Jacob and Mary (Soukup) Schmitt. She attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School and then Calmar High School. Doris always loved music and began playing the piano as a young girl for her family. Doris was united in marriage to Einar Jerome Thompson on November 28, 1953 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church by Rev. John Chihak in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Helen and Alvin Timp. They were blessed with six children: Noel, Tim, Kevin, Ann, Scott and Bruce. Einar and Doris farmed until 1981, when they retired and moved into Spillville. Her love of music lead her to eventually becoming the church organist for St. Wenceslaus Church. She continued playing the organ for masses, funerals and weddings for 45 years. She especially loved playing with the church choir. She was actively involved in the church Guild and cleaned the church and rectory for many years. Doris was a hard worker on the farm and cleaned homes to help put her children through college. All her children graduated from college, which was something she was very proud of. After moving into town, Doris was hired as a library assistant at the Spillville Library, where she enjoyed working for several years. The most important thing in Doris’ life was her family. She helped them whenever she could, including babysitting her grandchildren. Doris loved cool autumn days, going for drives in her car, and tending her flowers. She enjoyed reading, watching the news and the weather, watching the birds off her back deck and tending to all of her flowers. She enjoyed keeping up with the Decorah eagles, watching the Hawkeyes play basketball and the Packers play football. She loved the holidays with her family and buying just the right gifts. She loved having a good piece of candy and always made sure she had a bowl of candy in case someone stopped by. Doris fell in her home in October 2018 and broke her hip. This lead her to becoming a resident of Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Einar Thompson on February 25, 2002; and siblings Florence Moudry, Edward Schmitt, Edmund Schmitt, Mary Stine and Robert Schmitt. Doris is survived by her six children: Noel (Faye) Thompson of Ellsworth, IA, Tim (Laurie) Thompson of Calmar/Dubai, Kevin (Shawn Wyant) Thompson of Decorah, Ann (Scott) Fjelstul of Decorah, Scott (Jennifer Olsen) Thompson of Aspen, CO, and Bruce (Angelina Umansky) Thompson of San Francisco, CA; four grandchildren and one great-grandson: Melia (Ben) Slinger and their son Tanner, Kisara Thompson, John and Jay Fjelstul; one sister, Helen Timp of Spillville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
