Description	:	CHARLOTTE, NC ~ Doris Marshall Gibson Niven, 92, passed away November 1, 2012 at Mecklenburg Health Care. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Saturday November 3, 2012 at Heritage Funeral Home Weddington Chapel with burial to follow at Westfield Baptist Church Cemetery in Westfield, NC. Doris graduated from Women's College (now UNCG) and Queens University. She earned a Master's Degree in Music, and later her teaching certificate. Doris graduated from Women's College (now UNCG) and Queens University. She earned a Master's Degree in Music, and later her teaching certificate. She was a professional singer and musician, stage actress in NY and Charlotte, sang with Charlotte Choral Society and Oratorio, Trinity Presbyterian Church, First Presbyterian Church, and Myers Park Presbyterian Church; choir director of US Navy Blue Jackets Choir, Providence Baptist Church, and Little Church on the Lane, where she also served as organist. She taught piano in Charlotte and earlier in Moore County, NC. She enjoyed her last 20 years of work teaching first grade in Char-Meck schools, mostly at Providence Elementary where she was voted teacher of the year and developed innovative teaching methods. Doris was a very accomplished and multi-talented woman. She loved her cat, family, friends, former students, gardening, sewing, quilting, singing, and most of all her Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Marshall and Addie Bullington Marshall, husbands, Fred Gibson and Jim Niven, and son, Richard Kent Gibson, and her beloved cat, Spot. She is survived by son, John Marshall Gibson of Charlotte; Richard's wife, Susie Gibson Martin; granddaughter, Tristen Gibson and son, Jeromy, of Florida; close friends William Beach and wife, Barbara, of Atlanta, Georgia; Marian Stanback of Charlotte, NC; and Anne Nash of Deep Gap, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heart & Hand Veterinary Clinic, 704-573-2744, or by mail at 9705 Mintworth Ave. Ste. E., Charlotte, NC 28227.
