Doris Evelyn Nielsen was born on January 11, 1931 in Miller, SD. Read More	Doris Landeen, age 85, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Beresford, died on Friday, May 6, 2016 at Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls, SD. Doris Evelyn Nielsen was born on January 11, 1931 in Miller, SD. She graduated from Miller High School in 1949, attended and graduated from South Dakota Beauty Academy in Sioux Falls, worked in Miller as a beauty operator and met John V. Landeen when they were both working in the Miller area. John and Doris were united in marriage on 9/11/49 in Miller, SD. Doris and John moved to wherever John was working on road construction. They had three children in 3½ years, settling in Sioux Falls when the kids started school. In 1960 they got the opportunity to begin farming near Beresford and began the life’s work they both loved. Doris was a busy stay at home mom for many years. She loved sewing, giving haircuts, perming the girl’s hair, teaching us our letters and numbers, gardening, canning, raising chickens and helping to keep the farm running. She did much volunteer work at church. She was a strict disciplinarian and taught her family to work and appreciate what we had. She was “green” before recycling was common. Every bread bag and jar was washed and reused. She loved to have friends, family and neighbors over. Doris was especially devoted to caring for John during his illness with diabetes. After John passed away October 15, 1977, Doris went to floral design school in Denver, CO. She then moved to Vermillion to work in a flower shop, later starting her own in-home silk flower shop naming it Doris’s Floral Designs. In 1982 she moved to Sioux Falls, continuing her flower business. She was a savvy business woman and a generous friend, sister and mother. She later worked as a home health aide and was a hospice volunteer. Doris and John had 3 children: Gerald (Shelly) Landeen, Karen (Bill) Rush, Colleen (DeLynn) Stene, 10 grandchildren, Amy Peterson, Ann Johnson, Amber Paulson, John Landeen, Joe Landeen, Brian Rush, Michael Rush, Jason Rush, Travis Stene, Kyle Stene, and 16 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Gleva Schlotter, brother-in-law Paul Engelmann, sister-in-law Nada Landeen and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Doris is preceded in death by her husband John; parents, George and Margaret Nielsen; step-father, Jake Arbeiter; sisters, Elaine Spicer, Alice Engelmann, Marilyn Thompson Perschbacher, Donna Campbell and brother, Marvin Nielsen. The family requests memorials to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at JDRF.org. Funeral services will be 11AM Wed. May 11, 2016 at Komstad Covenant Church, rural Beresford, SD. Visitation will be 2-9PM Tues. at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford with the family present from 6-8PM and a prayer service at 8PM. [Courtesy: Wass Home for Funerals]
