Doris Fay McKibben was born on November 12, 1921, in rural Albion. She was the daughter of Joseph N. and Mabel (Price) McKibben. She attended elementary school in Albion and graduated from Green Mountain High School in May of 1935. Doris attended Central Iowa Business College in Marshalltown. Following college she went to work as a secretary for Central Christian Church and then worked for Glick Supply Company. On November 22, 1956, Doris married Vernon L. Milligan at Central Christian Church in Marshalltown. Together they owned and operated the Orpheum Coffee Shop and Benny’s Harmony Café. Even after they sold the café, Doris stayed on for several years at Benny’s. In addition, she worked at Fore Quarters restaurant as well. And then Doris worked for over 20 years at Stone’s Restaurant. Vern and Doris made their home in Marshalltown and lived in the same house for over 60 years. Doris and Vern moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in 2009. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 60 years. In her free time, Doris enjoyed, sewing, crocheting, reading, gardening, and spending time with her family—especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Left to cherish her memory are Doris’ children: Jane (Alan) Borton, Sue (Jeff) Clapsaddle, Cindy (Jeff) Mann, Tim (Dawn) Milligan; grandchildren: Tristan (Staci) Switzer, Tyson (Becky) Switzer, Joe Clapsaddle, Jim Clapsaddle, Brittene, Danelle and Jamie West. Great-grandchildren: Chloe, Addi, and Trista Swtizer, and George Clapsaddle. In death, Doris has rejoined her beloved husband of 53 years, Vernon; her parents; and two sisters.
