Nelson, age 95, of Portland, OR; formerly of Madison; died Tues., Oct. 18, 2011, at Anna's Adult Foster Care Home, Portland, OR. Doris A. Killion was born Sept. 11, 1916, at Montrose, SD, to Peter and Bertha (Salisbury) Killion. The family, including an older brother and six younger sisters, lived on a small farm thoughout the years of the Great Depression. She attended Franklin School, graduated from Orland High School in 1933 and received her teaching certificate from General Beadle Teacher's College in Madison. Doris taught at a one-room schoolhouse in DeSmet until she married Clarence Nelson on June 5, 1939, at Colton. They farmed near Brandon, Hartford, Colton and Franklin for several years. They moved to Corvallis, OR in 1956 where she worked as a dietician, bookkeeper and later as a remedial reading teacher. In 1973 she joined the Right to Read staff at the Oregon Dept. of Education where she worked enthusiastically until her retirement in 1981. They returned to Madison in 1982 to enjoy being near their extended family. Her husband died in 1988. In recent years, she has been a resident at a private nursing home in Portland. Doris was a teacher in the finest sense of the word. She passed her love of reading and books on to hundreds of students whose lives she touched. PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her parents; her husband Clarence; one son Larry; one brother Rex Killion; and three sisters, Harriet Aker, Mabel Baughman and Della Balsiger.
