Doris Lucille (Wagner) Fernau, oldest daughter of Alma Martens and Otto Wagner, was born November 7, 1924, twelve miles south of Mission, South Dakota. At the age of ten, her family moved to the Spencer area. Doris graduated from Spencer High School. She taught school at District 14 in Holt County, then moved to Portland, Oregon with her sister, Alma. After returning to Nebraska, she taught school at District 41, south of Monowi. Doris married Donald W. Fernau on October 17, 1948, at Bristow. They lived and worked in Holt County for ten years. In 1958, they began to farm and maintain a dairy herd on a farm east of Bristow. In 1984, they retired and moved to Bristow. Doris enjoyed gardening and helping neighbors and friends. Doris especially enjoyed reading books about the Orphan Train children, as her mother at the age of five had been brought to Madison, Nebraska on one of the trains. She also enjoyed quilting, both at home and with her church friends. Doris had been a member of the Bristow Homemakers Extension Club. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. In October 2015, she entered the Butte Healthcare Center where she passed away on December 24, 2015. Doris is survived by her sister, Alma Taylor of Lomita, California; brothers-in-law, Charles, Dickie, Larry, and Jerry (Judy); sisters-in-law, Vivian (Wayne) Kinzie and Marilyn (Jim) Galbraith; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don in August 2014; parents; sister, Viola Wagner DeVall Peterson; brothers, Glenn and Otto, Jr.; brother-in-law, Wayne Taylor; sisters-in-law, Joan Fernau, Shirley Fernau, Dorene Fernau, and Helen (Fernau) Harding; and brother-in-law, Floyd Harding.
