Doris Mae Vanden Hoek, daughter of Earl and Tillie (Kiep) Vanden Hoek, was born May 20, 1935 on the family farm in Douglas County, near Corsica, SD. She grew up and received her education in that area. Doris worked for a couple years as a telephone operator in Corsica, SD. Doris was united in marriage with Bernard Dykstra on September 8, 1955 at the Harrison Reformed Church in Harrison, SD. They farmed near New Holland, SD for eight years. As Bernie and Doris family grew, Doris stayed home to make a house a home. They moved to Colton, SD for a few years, Stickney, SD, then to Luverne, MN where she spent some time running a Christian Book Store and worked part-time as a custodian. In 1972, they moved to Sioux Falls, SD where they worked as custodians for American Freight Company and Linwood Wesleyan Church. Doris was an active member of Linwood Wesleyan Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and was an excellent cook. She had a collection of recipe books in which she had experimented with many recipes for the family. She enjoyed having coffee and visiting with family and friends. Some of her other interest was reading, gardening, word puzzles, music and playing the piano. Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Bernard Dykstra, Sioux Falls, SD; eight children, Glennys Klumper and her husband, Dennis, Dell Rapids, SD, Rhonda Swier and her husband, Gene, Colton, SD, Marliss Dykstra, Sioux Falls, SD, Linda Conrad and her husband, Roy, Sioux Falls, SD, Brenda Clark and her husband, George, Sioux Falls, SD, Brad Dykstra and his wife, Laura, Woodbury, MN, Shelly Bamsey and her husband, Tom, Sioux Falls, SD, Julie Dykstra, Sioux Falls, SD; 15 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a brother, Darrell Vanden Hoek and his wife, Londa, Corsica, SD; two sisters, Henrietta Bormann and her husband, Delton, Stickney, SD, Sharon Crago and her husband, Lyle Jr., Rochester, MN; and one sister-in-law, Linda Vanden Hoek, Corsica, SD; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Doris was preceded in death by her grandparents; her parents; and a brother Rod Vanden Hoek.
