As per Doris’ request, a graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, in Bethel United Church of Christ Cemetery, New Salem. Doris was born May 15, 1918, on the family farm south of Judson, to Gustav and Sophia (Weichman) Thiel. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethel United Church of Christ. She attended grades 1-8 in the country school located across the road from August and Erna Weichman. Doris loved the outdoors. She would often follow her dad around as he did farm chores. As a very young child, she would ride on his lap when he was behind the wheel of the family automobile–a Model A. When it was time to learn to drive, her brother Marvin was the person who taught her how. In her teenage years, she loved to ride horse, especially with her dear friends, Elda (Held) Thiel and Dorothy (Schwartz) Bethke. She was happiest when she could dance the night away or go hunting. She used a gun she borrowed from Dorothy (Schwartz) Bethke, who also loved to hunt. At times Doris would work for some neighbors, such as the Bill Werchau family, Felix Werchau family, and Art Bethke family, helping with household and/or outdoor chores. Doris was 23 when her mother, Sophia (age 53) died of cancer in 1944. After her mother’s death, she lived with and took care of her father, Gustav until his death. On October 11, 1959, she married Harold J. Held at Bethel United Church of Christ. After a honeymoon trip to South Dakota, they made their home on the Held family farm. On July 6, 1975, her husband passed away. After his death, she gained employment at Elm Crest Manor in New Salem where she worked for approximately 11 years–the majority of time as Head of Housekeeping. Winter driving forced her to quit working but she continued to live on the farm. A woman with a sparky personality, she never hesitated to share her view of different world-wide situations. She will always be remembered for her love of nature, especially birds. The bird feeders that hung just outside the kitchen window gave her hours of enjoyment. She was very knowledgeable about all birds and was happy to share that knowledge. Long winter months found her concerned about the pheasants, etc., so they too had food provided to them to help them winter over. Having a very soft heart for animals, Doris was accompanied through life with a dog or cat and often times both. She will be missed by her daughter, Jinny, a sister-in-law, Dorothy Thiel, New Rockford; and several nieces and nephews. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Gustav and Sophia; her mother and father-in-law, Ida and George Held; a nephew, Bruce Thiel; her brother, Marvin Thiel; and sisters and brothers-in-law.
