(Freburg) (Schleeter) Woollen, 102 years of age, of Holdrege, Nebraska (formerly of rural Wilcox) passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2019 at the Christian Homes Care Community at Holdrege. Doris was born October 7, 1916 on the family farm north of Loomis, Nebraska, the eldest of three children born to Henry Victor and Lillie Elizabeth (Mattson) Freburg. Doris was baptized on March 25, 1917 by Reverend B.O. Johnson. She received her religious instruction at the Westmark Evangelical Free Church and confirmed on May 31, 1931 by Reverend Paul Seashore. She received her education from District #46 in rural Phelps County through the eighth grade. On November 14, 1934, she was united in marriage to Walter William Schleeter at Stuttgart, Kansas, and to this union one daughter, Darlene Lugean was born August 4, 1939. The family made their home in the Bertrand area while their marriage lasted. On July 31, 1955, Doris was united in marriage to Melvin Woodrow Woollen. They made their home on the Woollen family homestead southwest of Wilcox until they moved to Chrisoma Villa in Holdrege in 2001. After living at Chrisoma Villa for ten years, they moved to independent living at Chrisoma. They celebrated their 61st Wedding Anniversary in July of 2016. Doris enjoyed cooking, sewing, and working in her flower and vegetable gardens. Doris and Melvin also enjoyed traveling together throughout the United States and abroad. Horses were always a big part of their lives, whether it was entertaining the nieces, nephews or attending parades in the area, special memories were formed. In early years, they enjoyed fishing in their pond, raising animals on the farm, and tending to their farm yard. She is a member of the Wilcox Community Church, and enjoyed bringing flower bouquets, and serving in the kitchen for special occasions. Doris was always willing to help family and friends when they were going through a serious illness. She also loved taking care of her grandchildren: Bradley and Tonya when they would visit on the farm. Her great-grandchildren also gave her much pleasure, and in return they visited Great-Grandma Doris as often as they could. Her devoted faith, determined attitude, humble demeanor, and care for others will be remembered fondly. On September 27, 2016, Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin. Besides her parents, and husband, Melvin; Doris was preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law: John William and Lillie May (Gifford) Woollen; her brother, Morris Victor Freburg; sister, Dorothy Ann Samuelson and her husband, Dellman; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Cloie Jensen and husband, Bill; Loren Woollen and his wife, Ardyce; Gifford Woollen; William Woollen and his wife, Dorothy; Lamoyne Woollen; Lamonte Woollen; Lois Ryan and her husband, Gene; Louisa Rabe and her husband, Clifford; Martin Mattson; Bernard Woollen and his two wives: Leone and Juanita "Nita"; and a great-grandchild. She leaves to celebrate her life; her daughter, Darlene Wallander and her husband, Bruce of rural Bertrand, Nebraska; two grandchildren: Bradley Wallander and his wife, Mishelle of rural Bertrand; and Tonya Johnson and her husband, Scott of Lincoln, Nebraska; five great-grandchildren: Jessica Ebert and her husband, Seth, Mitchell Johnson; Ashley Warren and her husband, Seth; Brandon Wallander; and Aidan Johnson; brother-in-law, Norden Woollen and his wife, Mary Ann of rural Wilcox; sister-in-law, Helen Woollen of Holdrege; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege. A memorial has been established in Doris' honor, and kindly suggested to the family for later designation.
