The cause of death was complications of progressive supranuclear palsy, a degenerative disease involving the death of parts of the brain. Mrs. Walker was born to James Henry and Ruth Kohler on Aug. 29, 1931, in Pagosa Springs. Her grandmother delivered her because the doctor was late. One of five children, she grew up in Arboles and graduated from Ignacio High School in 1950 with a scholarship to the U.S. School of Music. Mrs. Walker moved to Durango and went to nursing school at Mercy Hospital where she met her future husband, Merle Walker. The couple married March 23, 1957, in Aztec. In the late 1950s, she worked for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co., until the Walkers moved to Covina, California, following Mr. Walker’s work as a building contractor. While nursing, she attended El Monte Beauty College and earned her cosmetology license. “Doris later became a licensed beautician in four states,” according to her family. In 1969, the Walkers built one of the first motels in Quartzsite, Arizona, where Mrs. Walker ran a beauty shop and laundry. “Having lived many places, Durango was always where she called home,” according to her family. Her niece calls her the ‘rock of the family.’ She lived a full life, always giving to others and being the caregiver.” In the summers, Mrs. Walker was the nurse and archery instructor at the Girls and Boy’s Camp on Florida Road and owned Misty Salon of Beauty on North Main Avenue. In her later years, she went to the homes of people who were housebound to do their hair. She had competed in archery tournaments around the West. Mrs. Walker also enjoyed reading and traveling with her husband, but mostly, she enjoyed taking care of people. In the final years of her life, her daughter and son-in-law, LaRie and John Ford, and granddaughter, Cheyanne Ford, took care of her. Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Merle Walker. She is survived by her daughter, LaRie Ford, of Durango; and numerous extended family members. No formal services are planned. She had one of those infectious laughs and was always up for fun with the family. She was such a great caregiver and a very sweet grandmother.
