A private inurnment will be held at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens at a later date. Von was born June 3, 1932 in Paxton, Illinois. She was the oldest of five children born to Earl G. and Kathleen F. “Kaye” (Whitcomb) Darter. Her father became an upholsterer and moved the family to Chicago. He died unexpectedly in 1938 when Von was just six years old. She continued her education in the Chicago area and graduated 8th grade in 1947 from the William H. Ray Elementary School. Later that year Von’s mother moved the family to State Center, Iowa. Von and her siblings after school would help their mother run the local restaurant, the Hi-Way Inn, located in town on the historic Lincoln Highway. In 1948 she finished 9th grade in State Center and this ended her education. Von met her first husband Harold George Mayer at the restaurant when she served him coffee. He lived only a couple blocks away and came in quite often to eat. He continued to ask her out until she accepted and later they were married on November 28, 1948 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, State Center, Iowa. They first lived in a one-room farmhouse in rural Zearing on the Martin Gerke farm where Harold was a farmhand and received eggs, meat, and housing for part of his pay. Later they moved to Marshalltown and Harold became a truck driver. Von kept busy and made a little money by babysitting and helping in her mother’s restaurant, Kaye’s Korner in Marshalltown. The restaurant was on the SW corner of the Pilgrim Hotel building located on Main and 3rd Avenue across from the Evangelical Deaconess hospital. Von made extra money by crocheting and selling baby booties from the restaurant to customers heading to the hospital to visit the new moms and babies. They made the perfect gift. Von and Harold’s first child, Cindy, was born in 1951, followed by sons, Dan in 1953 and David in 1956. Soon after the birth of her first child she bought a new 1951 Singer sewing machine and enjoyed sewing clothes for herself and her kids. They went into partnership with Merle Buchan and started Harold & Merle’s Truckstop & Café on Highway 30 South of Marshalltown. Von’s previous restaurant and cooking skills came in handy and she ran the café for the duration of their ownership. In the spring of 1967 they moved from Marshalltown to Le Grand, Iowa where all three children graduated high school. Von and Harold later divorced after 26 years of marriage. In 1975 Von married her second husband Harley J. Sherman adding his children, Ron, Carole, Roxanne, and Jeff to the family. Von and Harley lived their married life in Marshalltown. During these years she worked for Stewart Lumber in the inventory department, receiving, organizing and restocking the store. She learned a thing or two about woodworking from the contractors over the years and succeeded in building cabinets in her home. After retirement Von worked as a home care provider for her dear friend Merilee Dick. And, finally, Von cared for her own mother until she passed away. Von loved children, flowers, cooking, and crocheting. She had a special love for children and, especially, babies. She couldn’t pass a baby without gushing over them until they let out a giggle or a smile. She was proud of her gardens full of flowers and, whether it was daffodils, coral bells, geraniums, poppies, roses, daisies, iris’s hollyhocks, or lilacs, something was always blooming. Von also crocheted in her free time making booties, animals, doll clothes, dishcloths, and afghan’s. Did I say afghans? I am pretty sure every family member, friend and baby has received one (or more). She enjoyed spending her summer vacations at her mother’s cabin in Canada fishing for walleye and picking wild blueberries. When picking blueberries in the brush she would tell us to sing or whistle to scare off the bears because they liked the berries too. She could make the best Blueberry Cream Cheese dessert; just ask the grandchildren. She was a marvelous cook all-around and her family dinners were the best. You could easily tell by her smile, big hugs, and kisses that family was everything to Von. And she sure was everything to us. Left to cherish her memory are daughter Cindy (Mayer) (husband Mark) Eaton of Marshalltown, IA; son Dan “Fred” Mayer of rural Green Mountain, IA; Ron Sherman (wife Jan) of Marshalltown, IA; Roxanne (Sherman) (husband Randy) Petersen of Des Moines, IA; Carole (Sherman) (husband Larry) Davis of Conrad, IA; Jeff (Peggy) Leonard Marshalltown, IA; sister-in-law Jo Ellen (Graff) Darter of Tama, IA; brother-in-law Reuben G. Eggers, AZ and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In death she has rejoined her parents Earl and Kathleen, husband Harley Sherman, son David W. “Mac” Mayer; paternal grandparents Henry C. and Alice M. (McCoy) Darter; maternal grandparents Earl E. and Dora L. (Adams) Whitcomb; siblings Betty (Darter) Klaas; Carol (Darter) Eggers; William “Bill” Darter; Nancy Darter-Anstrom, and special friend Morris Biddle.
