Swallum died at her home in the first ward Sunday morning after a lingering illness of several months from the effects of cancer of the breast. Read More	April 20, 1909 - Carroll Sentinel - Mrs. A.J. Swallum died at her home in the first ward Sunday morning after a lingering illness of several months from the effects of cancer of the breast. During the last few weeks she was a gentle sufferer and death came as a great relief to this poor, tired, and weary mortal who had done her part during the years allotted to her. Last December her health began to fail and medical assistance was called but from then until the time of her death, she gradually failed. Dorothy Ann Buttolph Swallum was born at Oberlin, Ohio, September 28, 1836 and was at the time of her death in her seventy-third year. When a child her parents, moved to Indiana and later to Lynn county, Iowa, where, in 1855 she was united in marriage to A.J. Swallum who survives her. She was converted in 1864 under the labors of Rev. Chas Evans and united with the Church of God. She has lived a very devoted and consistent Christian life. In 1874 they located in Calhoun county, where they resided until 1895, when they came to Carroll and have made their home here since with the exception of one year they lived in Nebraska. To this union there were born eleven children, nine of whom are living. Those living are: Mrs. Ada Peterson, Gertrude and Geo. of Carroll; B.B. of Hubbard; H.U., Del Norte, Colo; Dr. J.A., Storm Lake; Jesse, Pawnee, Neb; Mrs. Libbie Johnson, Monroe; and Mrs. Albina Hands of Thayer, Kan. The funeral was held this afternoon at the Church of God, Dr. Newcomer conducting the services. The following were the pall bearers: Messrs. A Bedford, H. Henslingh, G.W. Bailey, Christ Wenck, B. Woodward. The husband, who survives the deceased, is in good health for one of his years. The loss of his companion for over half a century is a sad shock to him. The family have the sympathy of many friends in their sad bereavement of the loss of a noble wife and loving mother.
