Her birth father was a man named McMANUS and her birth mother was Lois HAMM-ALVER, daughter of Charles Hamm and Hadie Latham-Hamm. (see her biological mothers memorial Lois Anne Hamm 65760521) Dorothy Ann Johnson Persons (Buchholz), better known as "Dottie" or "Johnni" to close and long-time friends, left this earth on April 15, 2014, to joyfully join Jesus in Heaven. During her 85 years, Dorothy left an indelible impression on those who loved her, knew her or who just had the lucky chance to mingle with her once or twice. Whether it was her striking red hair (never dyed), the way she smiled with her whole face or her vivacious laughter, Dottie had the natural good looks and charming charisma to capture attention. She definitely captured the attention of Harold Otto Persons, Jr., who took her off the market on June 14, 1946. They first welcomed a son (Albert Eugene) into their family and next a daughter (Patricia Mae). Dorothy and Harold both loved a good cup of coffee, card games, camping, hunting mushrooms and spending time with friends. Later on they took up golf and were forever hooked. Dorothy also liked watching golf on TV, which often turned into a perfect nap. A special teacher fostered Dorothy's appreciation of music when she was young and she carried that with her all of her life. She could sing her heart out, especially in church, where she served as both a choir member and director. Along with music, Dorothy contributed her time to the United Methodist Church in Sheffield as a Sunday school teacher and a church representative at the Iowa Methodist Conference. In the Sheffield community, she volunteered as a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader and was a member of the Legion Auxiliary, the Lioness Club and the Tri-S Club. Dorothy and Harold were married until his death in 1987. On June 11, 2000, she married George Frank Buchholz and moved north to live with him in Canada. She came back to live near her family in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, upon his death in 2010. Dorothy knew how to dress — and she knew her best colors: greens and teals. She was an impressive seamstress and sewed beautiful dresses and gowns for herself, dresses and dance clothes for her daughter Patricia, and a large collection of doll clothes that delighted her granddaughters. She could knit, crochet and needle point with the best of them, producing scarves, hats, mittens, leg warmers, slippers, Christmas ornaments, afghans and quilts. She adored her two kids, four grandkids and seven great grandkids. And she loved the in-laws that joined the mix. Surrounded by family was where she most loved to be. At her recent 85th birthday party, she looked around and asked, "Who can believe I'm responsible for all of this?" She liked crossword puzzles; crypto quotes, doing her nails; winning games; seafood restaurants; collecting crystal; a new pair of shoes; losing two pounds; cooking and baking; a nice glass of white zin, CBS soap operas; gold and silver jewelry; line dancing; making the world's best caramel corn; musical concerts; telling stories; family reunions and reading a well-written book. She was not fond of poor grammar, waiting in line and peas. She was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Inez Mae Johnson, first husband Harold Persons, brother Robert Johnson, sister Mildred Dunn and second husband George Buchholz. Those looking forward to seeing her again include her son Gene (Patti) Persons of Des Moines and formerly of Sheffield, her daughter Patricia (Robert) Pattison of Atkins, granddaughter Lori (Shawn) Drafahl of Johnston, grandson Scott Schiel of Blairstown, grandson Tony (Brenda) Persons of Lincoln, Neb., granddaughter Bethe (Nick) Hlas of Atkins and great grandchildren Julia and Andrew Drafahl, Jake and Katee Schiel, Kala and Quade Persons, and LeeAnn Hlas. A graveside service will be held at the Sheffield Cemetery on Saturday, April 19, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Sandra Gobal officiating. Memorial donations can be sent to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, 315 18th Ave., Hiawatha, Iowa, 52233. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.
