Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Friday, March 8th at the First Church of God in Iowa Falls with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm. on Thursday at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls and also an hour before services on Friday. Dorothy Ann Miller was born on October 24, 1924 in Royal Oak, Michigan to Clarence Franklin and Ada Mae (Keller) Poland. Dorothy was the valedictorian of her Buckeye, Iowa, high school class. With a scholarship, she worked her way though the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, graduated from Ellsworth Community College, and attained her teaching certificate at the University of Northern Iowa. She was a “one room” schoolhouse teacher, teaching multiple grade levels, first at Pleasant Hill School, then at Macy, Hardin #13. After teaching second grade in Owasa, she retired. She was known for her Christmas programs and handmade costumes in events like the dental parade. Dorothy was united in marriage to Dean Earnest Miller on August 16, 1958 at the First Christian Church in Hampton, Iowa. She then resided on the family farm five miles east of Iowa Falls until her death. Living the life of a farm wife, she gardened, canned and raised her family. Dorothy was known for her humor and wit. She was an avid reader with a love for knowledge. Dorothy is survived by her daughters Debra (Thomas) Lavalle of Trumbull, CT and Janet Miller of Iowa Falls and her sister Shirley Rich of Humboldt. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and her brother Robert Poland.
