Ten years later, she fled an abusive marriage with her infant son, Allan, and became a single parent and divorcee at a time when divorce was unheard of. Overcoming stigma and personal hardship, Dorothy taught in Kincardine before accepting department headships in History at Northern and St. Clair collegiates in Sarnia. In 1964, she was promoted to inspector of schools for the Ontario Ministry of Education -- the first woman to be named an inspector in an academic subject in Ontario, and one of the first on the continent. In 1974, she married the love of her life, Bruce "Alex" McPhedran. That same year, on sabbatical, she completed the course work for her Ph.D. in Education at the University of Ottawa. In 1975, more firsts for women: She was appointed Special Assistant and Women's Advisor to the Deputy Minister of Education in which capacity she was the government's representative on the Ontario Status of Women Council. From here she was posted to the ministry's Professional Development Branch, overseeing the Supervisory Officers' Certification Examinations, and the Senior and Continuing Education branch where she created and developed the Man in Society and World Politics courses, as well as courses in life skills and values education; these groundbreaking curriculum innovations have continued and evolved to this day. She concluded her career with her promotion to Executive Assistant to the Deputy Minister of Education. In addition to her storied professional career, Dorothy's personal life was rich beyond measure. She travelled the world, going behind the Iron Curtain to Russia and Hungary with Kent State University in the 1960s, to China and Cuba in the early 1980s, and to Turkey, Singapore, Thailand, the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica and nearly every country in Europe. In addition, post-retirement, Dorothy filled her busy schedule volunteering with Alex delivering Meals on Wheels (into their eighties) and "parenting" foreign exchange students as part of Western's Host Family Program. To relax, she took yoga classes, attended a book club, the University Women's Club and feminist Bible study groups. She also knitted for her grandchildren at her cottage and in the sunroom of her beloved London home that backed onto the Sifton Botanical Bog. Dorothy is remembered above all, however, as the best mother in the world. Loyal, devoted, patient, kind, brave and a constant source of unconditional love, she believed in the importance of independent thought and action and lived her life in that light. Predeceased by her husband, Alex, she is missed beyond measure by her son Allan and his husband Daniel; stepdaughters Mary Lou, Jan and Marg and their husbands Bryon, Ken and Sam; grandchildren Laura, James, Evan, Ian, Gord, Doug, Dan, Jordan and Taylor, their spouses and partners; great-granddaughter Daphne; sister Bernice and brother-in-law Ron; nephews Gord, Ken and Gerry and their families; the family of her deceased brother Reg, sister-in-law Beatrice and niece Lynne; and many longtime friends, above all Doris and Don Milne, Milly Chidley and their families. There will be a memorial service Wednesday, January 4th at 1:30 p.m. at First St. Andrew's United Church, 350 Queens Ave., London, Ontario.
