An extremely talented artist and long time member of the Toledo Artists Guild, her artwork is displayed in many homes throughout the area. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Oscar; sister, Viola; son, David and granddaughters, Toni and Dorothy. Interment at Greenlawn Cemetery, Delta, Ohio, at 3:00 p.m. Online condolences may be offered at www.reebfuneralhome.com Published in Toledo Blade on September 29, 2009 DOROTHY SINGER, 1907-2009 Oil painter collected bells, lived to be 102 Dorothy Singer, an amateur painter who was an active member of the Toledo Artists' Guild and who reliably attended services at her Toledo church even though she never had a driver's license, died Friday in the Hospice of Northwest Ohio at age 102. A precise cause of death was not known yesterday, but Matthew Boyd, a grandson, said Mrs. Singer's health deteriorated rapidly after she suffered a fall about 10 days ago at the rest home where she lived, even though that accident was not known to have caused injuries worse than bruises. Mr. Boyd said his grandmother usually painted with oils, and she chose a wide range of subjects for her work. "She could paint from a photograph and really bring that to life," he said. "Or she would paint [images of] figurines on a table." Mrs. Singer didn't paint many landscapes, the grandson said, "though I did find her one time on her balcony painting the view" from the family home near the Inverness Club in West Toledo. Born Dorothy Conklin in the Fulton County village of Delta, she married Lawrence Boyd at age 17 and the couple had three children. But it was her second marriage that endured. After divorcing Mr. Boyd, she met and married Oscar Singer, a sanitary engineer with Lucas County, creating a union that lasted for 52 years until Mr. Singer's 1988 death. Mr. Boyd said his grandmother and step-grandfather clicked so well that Mrs. Singer didn't even need to call Mr. Singer in from the yard - he somehow knew when he was needed in the house. Showing her independence, she lived alone in the couple's home for 16 years after her husband's death before moving to the West Park Village retirement home. Mr. Boyd said he made sure she got to services at Pathway Community Church, the former Home Acres First Church of God, every Sunday and his father took her home. Through the artists' guild, Mrs. Singer's paintings made their way into homes across Toledo. She gave up oils when she moved to West Park, but participated in the facility's watercolor classes. Besides her painting, Mrs. Singer was renowned within her family for her cooking. "Thanksgiving dinners were big in our family," Mr. Boyd said. She kept a collection of several hundred decorative bells in a curio cabinet, the grandson said, and a much smaller accumulation of collectors' plates. Many of the bells, he said, arrived in her home as gifts from friends who knew about that hobby. Mrs. Singer kept up on current affairs, reading the newspaper daily even in her twilight years and following pro golfer Tiger Woods. She was never employed outside the home. In an interview last year, Mrs. Singer attributed her longevity to clean living and her preference for a certain brand of nutritional drink. "I don't know how, just behaving yourself," she said. "I didn't get into trouble with anybody." "She never drank, never smoked," Mr. Boyd said. "She still had all her own teeth." Surviving are sons Donald and Tom Boyd, six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. The body will be in the Reeb Funeral Home, Sylvania, after 5 p.m. today.
