She was born in Nebraska on July 29, 1917, one of seven children of Flavian and Eva Mathers. Her early years were spent in Nebraska, and following marriage, she came with her husband Bernard Harker to Ellensburg in 1935. In addition to being a dedicated homemaker, she was a bookkeeper for her husband's building and construction business. She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
