Description	:	Dorothy E. Uhlir, daughter of Gustav and Mattie (Butterfield) Gast, was born April 28, 1923 at Plainview, Nebraska. Dorothy died Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at the Norfolk Veteran's Home. Dorothy attended rural school, Zion Lutheran School through the 8th grade, and graduated from Plainview High School with the class of 1941. On September 26, 1948 she was married to Edwin R. Uhlir, daughter of Gustav and Mattie (Butterfield) Gast, was born April 28, 1923 at Plainview, Nebraska. Dorothy died Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at the Norfolk Veteran's Home. Dorothy attended rural school, Zion Lutheran School through the 8th grade, and graduated from Plainview High School with the class of 1941. On September 26, 1948 she was married to Edwin R. Uhlir at Zion Lutheran Church in Plainview. Three children were born to this union: Richard "Rick", David, and Pamela "Pam". Dorothy lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a short time with her sisters before moving back to Verdigre, Nebraska where she and Edwin farmed until retiring to Battle Creek, Nebraska in 1986. Dorothy has resided in the Veteran's Home in Norfolk, Nebraska for the last 10 years. Dorothy was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek and was active in various church groups including the Ladies Aid. Dorothy was musically gifted and used her talents to enhance her faith and the faith of countless others through her involvement in St. John's Church Choir, and also through her playing of the church organ at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Verdigre for 40 years. She also dearly loved singing with all of her sisters in various groups. Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt. Her children best remember her great cooking through the years. Dorothy was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 4834 and American Legion Post 224 in Niobrara. She also enjoyed her years working as a CNA at Alpine Village in Verdigre, and also helping Edwin around the farm. Dorothy is survived by: sisters, Phyllis (David) Canfield of Pheonix, Arizona, and Leona Nissen of Norfolk, Nebraska; brothers, Rollie (Mary Jean) Gast of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Lloyd Gast of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Hazel Devine of O'Neill, Nebraska; son, Rick (Diana) Uhlir of Norfolk, Nebraska (children, Troy (Suzanne) Uhlir of Norfolk, Nebraska, Tony (Mary) Uhlir of Sidney, Nebraska, Todd (Kari) Uhlir of Norfolk, Nebraska, Tom (Jen) Uhlir of Omaha, Nebraska, and Tyrone (Jenny) Uhlir of Nashville, Tennessee; daughter Pam Uhlir of Kearney, Nebraska; step-grandchildren, Lynnette (Tony) Waugh of Madison, Nebraska, and Shane (Stacie) Osborn of Omaha, Nebraska; 24 great grandchildren; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by: husband, Edwin Uhlir on July 4, 2005; son, David Uhlir; sisters, Maureen Smith, Wilma Seevers, Winnie Olinger, Norma Gnewuch, and Verleen Dickinson; and brothers, Jim, Raymond and Gerald Gast.
