(Atkinson) Hargreaves, 93 of Methuen passed away on October 30, 2016 at the Berkeley Retirement Home, Lawrence, Dorothy or Dot as called by her friends, was born on July 6, 1923 to the late Harvey Atkinson and Ruth (Hogarth) Atkinson. She was raised in Methuen and attended Searles High School. Dorothy was married to Pickles Hargreaves Jr. in 1944 after his return from naval service in Europe. Together they had and raised four children in Methuen. Dot was predeceased by her former husband in 2004. She was a former auxiliary member of American Legion Post 122 and VFW Post 8349, both in Methuen. Dorothy was employed at the former Cherry & Webb Department Store in Lawrence and former Western Electric in North Andover where she worked on the Telstar satellite; However, her employment in the maternity ward at Lawrence General Hospital as a housekeeper brought her great satisfaction and joy. Dot attended St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Methuen and sang in the church choir for close to 50 years. She had a beautiful singing voice which she was known for at the Berkeley Retirement Home and she was also called “The Trivia Queen” because of a vast knowledge of past and current events and things. Above all else, Dot was an excellent homemaker and a caring, loving mother to her four children. Her family members include her daughter, Ruth S. (Hargreaves) McGuire and her husband, Michael of Lawrence. Dot also leaves her three sons, Thomas H. Hargreaves and his wife Barbara of Methuen, David A. Hargreaves and his wife, Janet of Derry, NH and Mark R. Hargreaves and his wife, Rosemary also of Derry, NH. She also leaves her nine grandchildren, Tracy L. Black and her husband, Jeffrey of Walpole, MA; Daniel D. Hargreaves and his wife, Molly of Harmony Township, PA; Michael T Hargreaves of Methuen; James D. Hargreaves and his wife, Leah of Hillsborough, NH; Geoffrey K. Hargreaves and his wife, Anna of Methuen; Heather J. Clark and her husband, Thomas of Derry, NH; Sara A. McGuire of Columbus, OH; Abigail R. Hargreaves of Arlington,VA and Justin M. McGuire of Lawrence, MA. Dot was recently predeceased by her grandson, Ethan E. Hargreaves, 22, with whom she shared the same birthday. Dorothy is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, Joshua, Marcus, Faith, Autumn, Arianna, Holli, Samantha, Aaron and Avery as well as several nieces and nephews including Harleen Houle of North Andover who was also a long- term caretaker for her. The Hargreaves family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the phenomenal staff and her friends at The Berkeley Retirement Home who treated Dot as if she was their mother for the outstanding care she received during her many years as a resident there. Family and friends are invited to visiting hours on Friday November 4, 2016 from 9am to 10:30am at The Charles F. Dewhirst Funeral Home 80 Broadway, Methuen. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Friday in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 90 Broadway, Methuen. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Methuen.
