The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service, Postville, is in charge of the arrangements. She was born the fourth child and third daughter of Earl and Sophia (Hager) Livingood at their farm home just outside of Frankville, Iowa, on July 16, 1920. She was baptized on Aug. 28, 1920, by the Rev. Peck and confirmed on March 27, 1932, at the Frankville Community Church. After marrying her husband, she was confirmed into the Lutheran faith on March 10, 1944. She attended school at Ludlow No. 9 and continued to the 10th grade in the Frankville School, but couldn't finish high school because of transportation problems. On June 30, 1939, she married Glen Emil Schave, son of William and Lena (Fischer) Schave, at the parsonage of the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, Iowa. Three children were born to this union, Sandra, Mary and William (Bill). Dorothy and Glen celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in June of 2000. Glen passed away in December of 2000. Dorothy and Glen farmed in the Castalia, Postville Junction, Clermont and Gunder, Iowa areas. They ran the Standard Gas Station and G & D Cafee in Castalia, the Commercial Hotel in Postville, the Laundromat in Monona and a salvage yard in Gunder, Iowa, where they made their home until moving to Postville in 1996. Dorothy also worked at the Postville Turkey Plant for five years, the Good Samaritan Home in Postville and for five years at the Swiss Valley Cheese Plant in St. Olaf, Iowa. After Glen's death, Dorothy lived in Postville for two years. She then lived in Clermont and finally moved to Dubuque, living within a block of both her daughters, then living with her oldest daughter until moving to Sunnycrest Manor. Dorothy retired from the workforce in 1982 and went home to take up her hobbies full time. She was a genealogist and learned that her family descended from two of the early pioneer families of Allamakee County, one being Rueben Smith, of the Old Stone House, rural Waukon, and the other being Greenbury Jackson Livingood. She learned to use a computer at the age of 81 and thoroughly enjoyed doing it. The computer enhanced her genealogy research by placing her in touch with distant relatives. Games on the computer amused her for many hours in the later years when getting around became such a chore. She especially enjoyed puzzles and card games. All of her married life, she collected the weekly obits and interesting articles from the weekly newspaper, the Postville Herald, and made scrapbooks with these articles. She has left a gold mine of knowledge with this hobby. Dorothy also loved to quilt in her later years and helped with many, many quilts at the Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder. When living in Gunder, Glen would saw out wooden projects, sand and eventually put them together after Dorothy had painted them in detail. She became quite skilled at this painting and her children cherish her many gifts. Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Wander and Mary E. (James) Durr, both of Dubuque; a son, William "Bill" Schave, of Florida; three grandsons, Mike (Cathy) Lantz, of Waverly, Iowa, Brian (Kelly) Durr, of Dubuque, and Richard Durr, of Florida; two granddaughters, Lori Lantz, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Mandi (Steve) Rattigan, of Florida; two great-granddaughters, Tifani (Bill) Daly, of North Liberty, Iowa, and Erica Stowers, of Dubuque; four great-grandsons, Tyler Bushman and Anthony "Tony" Bushman, both of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Cody Durr and Caleb Durr, both of Dubuque; a great-great-granddaughter, Ezralynn Raylene Stowers, of Dubuque; stepgreat-grandchildren, Michael and Jessica Boen, Kyle Ridgeway, TJ Hanson, Crystal Smith and Brittany Rattigan; stepgreat-great-grandchildren, Robbie and Bobbie Jo Smith and Bradley Hanson. She also was preceded in death by her father, Earl (1962); her mother, Sophia (1980); sons-in-law, Marvin Lantz (1970) and Gerald Wander (December 2001); a daughter-in-law, Carolyn (Monroe) Schave (March 2004); a grandson, Robert Earl Lantz (1973); a baby brother in 1919; and two sisters, Olga (Livingood) Krambeer (1976) and Gertrude (Livingood) Yarwood (1990).
