Read More	Dorothy Fern (Miller) Erickson, 96, Albert Lea, MN, died Friday, April 21, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society facility in Albert Lea, MN surrounded by her family. Dorothy was born on June 25, 1920 on a farm outside of Esmond, SD to parents Emma (Fingerson) Miller and William Floyd Miller. The family moved to Iroquois, SD when she was 7 years of age and attending the 2nd Grade. She continued school in Iroquois though the 7th Grade. The family moved to the community of De Smet in the summer of 1934. Dorothy attended De Smet High School and graduated in 1938. Dorothy began her work life at Dakota Central Telephone Co. and Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. where she served as an Operator, Chief Operator, and Service Representative for the De Smet office. After the De Smet business office was closed, Dorothy worked in several downtown De Smet businesses including the Ben Franklin Store, the De Smet News, and Peschl Meats and Locker. For the last 10 years of employment Dorothy served in the Dietary Department at the De Smet Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1985. Dorothy was united in marriage to Gerald Sylvan Erickson on August 11, 1941 in Brookings, SD. Two Sons, Gary and Keith, were born and raised from this marriage. While residing in the De Smet community Dorothy was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church and UMC Women’s Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Let’s Go Club. She always enjoyed attending social events at church, at the school, and within the community. Dorothy was especially fond of the members of the Let’s Go Club and its monthly gatherings. Following her retirement in 1985, Dorothy liked to travel and went on several interesting tours to Hawaii, Yellowstone National Park, and the Autumn New England area with her sister Winnie and friends. She especially enjoyed her travel and visits to be with relatives in North Carolina, Minnesota, and California. Dorothy spent almost every summer highlighted by a two week family vacation to the Black Hills. Dorothy also liked to cook, sew, and work on various craft projects. Survivors include her two sons and their spouses, Gary (Ellen) Erickson of Charlotte, NC and Keith (Beth) Erickson of Albert Lea, MN; 5 Grandchildren – Matthew, Casey, James, Kathryn, and Will; 6 Great Grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Emma and William; Husband Gerald in 1981; her three sisters Mildred Whyte, Beulah Lindsay, and Winnie Yelverton; and one brother Donald Miller. Dorothy spent the last two years of her life in Albert Lea, MN residing at the Hidden Creek Assisted Living Facility and later at the Good Samaritan Skilled Care Unit. - Osthus Funeral Home
