At this time, the family was living in a sod house on the east edge of Lewellen. When Dorothy was six years old, the family moved into the newly constructed frame house, that Carson built near the old soddy. Dorothy's early childhood was spent living in a happy household full of love, wonderful smells from her mother's good cooking and always several outdoor pets, cats, dogs and horses. A cousin, Bernard Roberts became her stepbrother around 1914. In those days, the extended Irish families always gathered at different homes on Sunday for dinner and good times. Dorothy had good memories of her childhood. All the early pictures show Dorothy holding either someone's baby or one of her pets. Dorothy became a member of the Lewellen Methodist Church and was active in all the youth activities. She especially had good memories of her time spent in Epworth League. After attending grade school and high school in Lewellen, Dorothy met and fell in love with Clifford Tapp. Dorothy and Clifford, better known as Tapp, were married on September 19, 1931 and started their married life living on area farms. Those early 30's proved to be hard times for everyone, but the young families survived by working hard and helping their friends and neighbors. Many evenings were spent by sharing the food they had and playing cards by lamplight. Dorothy was well known for being an excellent cook. She spent many hours tending a garden and lovingly canning or freezing the fruits of her labors. The Tapp's always raised chickens and turkeys for their consumption as well as selling them to others. Every summer found her yard full of beautiful flowers. Dorothy and Tapp loved their babies and always wanted more. When their first son, Jack was only two years old, Dorothy fell over his tricycle, which was parked near the front steps, thus causing a miscarriage. Dorothy ended up in a hospital in North Platte where the doctors worked hard to control the infections. Since Penicillin was not yet available, she spent several months in the hospital. The doctors were sure that she would have no more children and probably not even survive. But, Dorothy survived that ordeal and went on to have two more boys, Bob and John. Although that sickness left her crippled, she continued to lead a normal life full of work and play. Clifford Tapp passed away on July 15, 1972, shortly after the farm had been sold and they had moved into town. Dorothy's spare time was spent enjoying her children and grandchildren and her friends. After developing arthritis, she was forced to slow down, and spent many hours crocheting and working crossword puzzles. With the deterioration of her eyes, she finally had to give up the handiwork, but continued to play cards and relive the many memories of her early childhood and married life. One of the highlights in Dorothy's life was being recognized and honored for being a member of the United Methodist Church for over fifty years. Dorothy entered the Lewellen Care Home in January of 2001, and after a brief stay at the Chappell Nursing Home, was residing at the Nursing Home in Oshkosh at the time of her passing on February 23, 2002, at the age of 89 years, four months and seventeen days. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law. Bob and Kay, and son and daughter-in-law, John and Marcia; daughter-in-law, Mary Lou; and six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Nellie, her parents, her stepbrother, husband, Clifford, and one son, Jack. Services were held at the Lewellen United Methodist Church on Wednesday, February 27, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Jerry Mercer officiating. Burial was in the Ash Hollow Cemetery. Holechek Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
