Dorothy Helen Schuck was born March 2nd 1926 in Sioux Falls, SD to John Henry and Martha Helen (Teslow) Schuck. She received her education in Sioux Falls graduating from Washington High School in 1944. Following high school she completed 18 months of nursing school. On Sunday, April 7th 1946 Dorothy was united in marriage to Clarence “Blackie” Black. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls and had three children, Charles, Susan and Sarah. Dorothy was employed as a bookkeeper for 8 years at Manchester Biscuit Co. and for 16 years at Howard Falen Oil Co. She and her daughter Susan owned and operated The Flower Box at 8th and Cliff for 8 years. She also worked part time at Shopko Optical for several years. Dorothy was a lifelong member of Eastside Lutheran Church, where her Grandmother Teslow was a charter member. She loved her church and was happy to volunteer her time in many different capacities. Dorothy was many things to many people, she was gracious, kind, generous and warm. She loved her family unconditionally and would do anything for them. Dorothy enjoyed dancing with Blackie out on the town or even just in their living room. Her grandchildren’s sporting events and activities were always a favorite pastime. All that knew her knew of her love of her cats. She also enjoyed knitting baby blankets, stocking caps, mittens and sweaters for family and friends. Grateful for having shared her life are her grandchildren: Leslie Higgins and her husband Joel of Brandon, SD; Eric Black of Sioux Falls, SD; Christie Dierking and her husband Luke of Lincoln, NE; Leah Cotton and her husband Cody of Orient, SD; Nicole Lanspa and her husband Eric of Sioux Falls, SD; Ross Scott of Bonita Springs, FL; Reed Scott of Wessington Springs, SD; twelve great grandchildren: Erin, Jessica, Luke, Ryan, Jarrid, Noah, Caleb, Eli, Layne, Carley, Claire, Bryant: four great great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law Donna Black of Sioux Falls, SD; a special cousin Bonnie Atkins of Sioux Falls, SD and a host of other relatives and friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Clarence Black; an infant daughter Sarah; a son Charles Black; and a daughter Susan Scott. It is a comfort to the family to know that because of her strong faith and love for Jesus she is now resting peacefully in His arms.
